Has anyone replaced the windshield of their 70 series themselves?
The manual indicates that the factory's rubber seal is glued in place and must be cut away with piano wire.
Any advice to share? I have or do this so I can pass inspection.

Yes, we did my BJ71 (non-hinged windshield) ourselves. 70 series glass is pricey and harder to get. Why take the risk? We have three extra windshields in the attic so that's why we tried it. In the past I've taken my 73 and 77 into a glass shop and had them do it - shop around because I had quotes that ranged from $75 to $400.

What type of 70 series are you looking to do? I think the 77 had the sealant and the 73 and 71 didn't.

We used essentially the same technique as you would use to take 40 series glass out and reinstall. Should be plenty of threads on that subject if you search.

BJ74, hinged frame. I did read threads on the install. I know I can do that. I have only seen the manual's instructions for removal so that's where I need help.

My experience = same as a 40 (or two feet)

Well, I found a thread showing and describing the removal of a 40 series windshield. It made sense: a reversal of the rope-in-the-seal install method.
It was clear there was no adhesive used on the rubber seal, factory or otherwise.

Will the same rope trick work if the seal is glued in place? Seems like no.

Hello,

It is better to use sealant when changing the windshield. Otherwise water will pour in. Ask me how I know.

Sealant between rubber and metal frame, between rubber and glass or sealant all over?

new seal, no sealant needed.

rope trick plus liquid dish soap. 1/2 banana operation. have ends at midpoint at bottom, set bottom first, remove.

leaks are from a bad (rusty) frame or really from cowl-frame seal leaking because of shrinkage or rust.
