I have a 1970 FJ40 with the original engine. I am having distributor issues again. It has a Mallory duw point distributor.i was going to converted to electronic ignition it that kit is no longer available. Mallory has been bought out by MSD and getting parts for this distributor is almost impossible. I would like to step up to electronic ignition what are the best options. I know the DUI distributor is probably the best but it's quite expensive. Are there any less expensive options that are equally reliable? Any help are opinions would be greatly appreciated thank you

FJ60 large cap is what I would buy, along with the matching ignitor. Be aware that your Mallory distributor gear may have ruined your cam for a different distributor. The gear on some aftermarket distributors is not cut to the stock specs and causes wear on the gear and the cam.

Thank you how can I tell if the gear messed anything up?

Fellow Member and SUPPORTING VENDOR , @4Cruisers is the MUD NipponDenso Go to Guy , in my strong opinion

this should be your step #1

it will only lead to a long list , of successful and correct next steps too .......... :)

when it some to a specialized Topic , such as you out line above , you utilize a specialist , in this area , plain and simple

Return it to a High Performance ALL NOS OEM Toyota Genuine Parts NipponDenso Total Ignition System format and set up ...

you can't go wrong choosing this path , i would personally go this route hands down ........

Out of the many ways to go, the DUI is probably the way to go. Parts are easy and available . I went with a points distributer and removed points and installed pertronix. Still works fine.

do you have the vacuum port at the base of your carb to support a '69 vacuum advance dizzy?

I concur with @ToyotaMatt 100%. My newly refurbished original distributor from @4Cruisers is an amazing piece of work. My truck runs like it just came off the lot in 1979. That one is original Nippon Denso electronic, but I also have a rebuilt @4Cruisers points dizzy, about to go in my 74, and that would be a drop in plug and play for your 1970.

@4Cruisers , knows how to MOD> a oem NipponDenso unit Correctly , and by the Alternative FSM Book i like to say , re-curves etc...

he has also , NOS and NEW OEM Vacuum Advancers Diaphragms for loads of various Land Cruiser factory Distributors ,

if it's a DENSO , he can make it alive again .. :)

timeless attn. to period correct details , are no joke

^^^ @4Cruisers. Stand up guy! Unrelated note..Has great taste in beer as well.

I believe Pertronix makes an electronic/breakerless ignition kit to convert the Mallory dual point you already have, I actually thought I saw one of these kits for sale in the Mud classified ads ??? The issue with Mallory dual points is 1. dual points last twice as long, but then when you replace them you have to replace twice as many, and 2. the dual points don't wear at the same rate, sooooo when one is worn more than the other your engine runs like poo poo.

Pull the distributor and have a look at the gear for abnormal wear. If your not familiar with removing & re-installing a distributor, read up or ask before yanking it.
From what I've read, GM distributor gears sort of fit the Toyota cam. Close enough to engage and work but off enough to do damage in time.

I put a “big cap” distributor and igniter out of an FJ60 on my ‘74 around 2004/5 and haven’t touched the ignition since.

I've seen the teeth worn paper thin on Delco/GM drive gears that were in Landcruiser engines, can't say what the cam gear looked like ??? The GM gears have the same number of teeth, the same distance apart, but on a different phase angle.
