Difficulties at the Docks

Unfortunately for our defensive young friend, I see the crashes on a daily basis. And again unfortunately for him, the VAST majority involve young, male drivers. Although his perception seems to be that a statistical reality means a stereotype, that is tautological reasoning. I wish I could say more, but most young males have minimal impulse control and many, myself included when I was that age, realized it and took steps to minimize the danger. It is indeed true that there are many responsible young male drivers. However, the vast majority of high speed crashes involve those same young male drivers. To deny that is ridiculous. It's simply a fact.

Having read that post, I have a followup, somewhat in defence, in a manner of speaking, of young male drivers. There is one group that actually has an even higher ACCIDENT rate. Note I did not say "high speed crash" rate. It has been published over and over again, all over the world. Because this group drives relatively low distances, the overall number of accidents is quite low. However, once the actual number of crashes by distance driven is worked out, the numbers exceed even that of young males, and by a very substantial margin. Can anyone guess who this group might be comprised of?

Lay it on us Martin.

I resemble that remark!!

Old people?

Also my vote!!

While young folks have high speed crashes because of inexperience the old folks have crashes because of slow reflexes, poor vision etc. etc.

As far as male young drivers.
Well I am still somewhat young (almost 24).

It was not until I was about 20 I would say I calmed down.
With my years of 17-19 being the worst.
When I was 16 I was VERY VERY cautious.
But as I got older I got more comfortable and more adventerours.
By they time I had been driving for a year I had no fear.

I can tell you my Volkswagen Golf (1st car) was governed at 180kph .
It would get there in about 20-25 seconds.
I can tell you it 0-60 in about 11 seconds,
It would go from 90kph to 130kph for passing in about 5 seconds if I grabbed 3rd gear.
I learned about cutting the apex, double clutching, braking points, power bands on 4 strokes etc...

Now it didn't help that my dad's passion was motor racing. When I started 4wheeling I think he was a little disappointed. I think he would of preffered me to hit the track and become a F1 driver. It's kinda his fault I got into 4 wheeling. He used to take me camping and fishing, and planted a seed for the outdoors. First time I went 4 wheeling with friends I was hooked. More technical and less speed. Lots of fun, and you go somewhere, not just around a track. :)

Anyways he is a huge sports car fan. When I was young he had a Lotus. (And a Jaguar, and now a BMW as his daily driver) He had his Lotus from when I was 6 years old to 18. He said last year, had I been in my 20's it would of went to me. But my dad new, I could not handle a car like that my age. A high powered, fast, agile, and FIBERGLASS car is a death trap in the hands of a teen. And truth be told, I knew it too.

Had I been given that car, I would of crashed. Same reason I WOULD NOT LET MYSELF buy a super bike. A 300kph bike for under 10K!! I might as well budget for a coffin too. Serious. :)

Anyways, sorry fellow young guys. But at some point the need for speed calls.
It's a fact of life. I still feel comfortable going high speeds. But I don't anymore.
I would feel very comfortable hitting the track and taking a bike or car to the limit.
My problem is not fear, but trying to over drive the car.

Point is, any young male will have a need for speed at some point.
Maybe you don't even know it yet. But trust us older people..
It will happen. If it does not happen in your teens, it will happen in your 20's or 30's.....
99% chance it will happen in your teens.
Good news is, it will pass.

Another question: Why is it most teens are always in such a rush?
They have all the time in the world.

Sorry for the book.
I just wanted to share because at my age, I can relate to both sides.

Peace,
Nick

Everyone joins forums to gain and share information - referring to any one group based on age or otherwise isn't necessary - youg is young and older is older - np.

Back to problems at the docks though - any updates on issues with trucks being shipped? I'm not getting any replies from my importer lately.

Wow thats creepy - the very instant I posted a message arrived in my inbox from the importer.. slight delay for the container during passage, arrives this weekend.

Docks and Age

Dieseldan - think of The Twilight Zone opening music when you say creepy. :)
oops I'm dating myself..( you know age not the other way)..sheesh:)

Nick along those lines (age)...
When I was 19 I rolled end over end panel over panel for 125 feet give or take a foot.. Not one bit of the Toyota 1600 wagon was left unskathed.. :o I was luck ,,I walked away.
Reason too fast on a road under construction..
Now I'm entering the other end of the scale Getting old:eek: I will be 56 on the 16th.
BUT that being said the good thing is I can start taking back limited $$$ from RSP's socked away in the years it took me to get from there (the roll) to here (today). (thought I'd be dead by now)

:censor: :censor: :censor:

Back to the Docks -- I could tell you a story or two and sing you a sailor's song to boot but wouldn't want to bore you:D

Speaking of age I just noticed I'm now classed as a regular here..:grinpimp:

It would seem this thread is completely hijacked! But as you have guessed, it's seniors, and particularly older ones. The older you go the higher the crash rates. The correlation coefficient is near 1.0

I think the solution is obvious: further testing. But it is a political atomic bomb and that's my feeling as to why it has happened to only a limited degree.

Martin, I totally agree, I can see it in my parents and my mother can see it in my father.
Testing needs to happen but it will be an issue of supposed age discrimination. Perhaps a blanket retest every 10 years or so would do it as most older folks are probably OK at 60 - 65 but go downhill after that.

Lose your licence lose your independance, as far as spontanius pick up and go is concerned.
In other words you will become a burden on someone or just not get to go anywhere..

Yep more testing --- good luck to yeh..

In fairness to Yotawheeler, I may have made it sound like I think all 40 ish or more (males if not females) drive sedately along at the speed limit, all the time. Well....that's not what I think at all. The need for speed doesn't really go away. But ones ability to deal with ones own limitations and temptations is what is often learned with age.

I had a car, prior to the cruiser, which was, to put it mildly, insanely quick. To the extent you could be doing 180 kph++ on the highway and not really know it because the car was so quiet and so effortless. Unless other traffic was around, it was pretty much impossible to keep the speeds down without either watching constantly or using cruise.

Anyhow, I'm much better off in my cruiser. As Clint Eastwood said (can't remember the movie) "A man's got to know his limitations" (that could go for women too of course, but in the movie he said "man".)

and crushers when life is your teacher how many of those lessons do you forget? some mistakes people have to make for themselves

not too many... usually the second leason is the last one...
