Hi Everyone,

I came across this BJ73, but I can't figure out the code plate in the hood. It's totally different than the usual one.
I was wondering if the car was assembled in Salvador??!

Anyway I'm always used to get answers from the pro's! :D

I used the mobile cam so sorry for the low res. pictures.

Thanks
Issa

looks like a 2.5 VM motori engine ? I'd rather have a 3B for the real thing *BJ*

So whats the story on these, are the engines fitted in Italy?
Or could this be the Atlantic engine which I think is the VM or Perkins engine made in South Africa and fitted there too?
Is "P2" the plant at which it was assembled as I cant see the Honsai plant code of A11?

According to the faq only Portuguese BJ73s came with the Italian made Stabilimenti Meccanici VM engine.

The Atlantis engine was Perkins licensed and made in South Africa for use in HJ75s

Well i own one of these; it is partly assembled in Portugal in a bus factory. The VM engines, either a 5 cyl 2,5l or a 4 cyl 2,5l are considered to be a piece of junk, I replaced mine for a 14 B. Everything but engine, glow relay and seat belts is Toyota but not everything is BJ parts Including the bellhousing and input shaft. Salvador ... is the name of the factory
Take a look at my 14B swap write up for details.

Just matched the numbers against my truck.
This truck is produced late 1990, so it may differ from mine. It looks like the frame part number is identical to a HZJ73, my frame has a unique partnumber to bj73 VM

Mystery solved ,thanks for that.:D

Thanks guys for all the info.

Lowenbrau, your right it's a 4.56 limited slip, but in the toyota codes file I have there is "LD cruiser, Aftermarket HD cruiser" written beside it. So are they light duty axles?

This car is for sale here, its all complete except for the engine, which I prefer!

By the way oddball in a good or a bad way ??!

I guess bad as for the limited slip, but what about the gears??

Will the gears match with a 12H or a 13BT engine?

I was wondering if anyone has more feedback about these cars.
Are they considered less quality? Are the axles HD or LD as I posted before this was written beside it "LD cruiser, Aftermarket HD cruiser" any idea what it means?

Cheers
Issa

I'm sure this is a HD cruiser. The way to tell is whether it has coils or leafs. I'd expect a 9.5" rear ring gear and an 8" front. I have no idea about the concerns about the Italian motor or the Portugese assembly but I'd expect the vehicle to be an awful lot like one built in Japan.

It's all leaf springs, but this part written beside the axle code is the thing that I don't understand. This was my old Fj70 axle code K052

K: 9.5"
05: 3.70 "HD Cruiser, Aftermarket HD Cruiser"
2: open differemtials

All this is pretty clear, but what about the part written beside the axle:

"LD cruiser, Aftermarket HD cruiser"

Does it make any difference?
Maybe it's because of the 4.56 gears, as it's a higher gear, so more for on road use?? Hmm just guessing!

The 4.56 gears are lower meaning the engine will be at 10% higher RPM(approx) for the same speed as 4.11.

Not good unless you want massive tyres or live in the mountains

As I understand those gear ratio are high torque, which should be better for offroading, and massive tyres will give more speed on road.

Thanks ....this made me rethink!
