Hi Guys,

I have a 91 model FJ73 with a carb 3F engine. When doing research for my rebuild, I've found that Toyota put some different stuff on the production models as from Feb 1990.
When looking at part suppliers, I see a lot of parts that are up to 1/1990.
On my rig I have a 8'' high pinion front axle/diff. Someone told me this is the axle/diff used on the FJ80.
Looking in the Max Ellery repair manual and the Toyota manual, it's all FJ62 parts that can be used on a FJ73.

When doing stuff like wheel bearings and knuckle rebuild, do I use the ''FJ73 up to 1/90'' parts, do I use FJ62 parts or do I order FJ80 parts?? Or just get all the parts out and then just measure it?

I suspect nobody is answering, because you basically have answered your own questions.
Your rig was built after 12/89, so why do you think the earlier parts will fit?

FYI, the HZJ73 started production in 1/90, with the 8" high pinion front diff.. plus some other differences to the earlier models, in addition to the obvious engine change. Before that, the BJ73 had the large low pinion front diff., similar to the 60 series.

Your axle is similar to an 80 series, but it is not identical, particularly at the outer ends. I have no first hand experience there, but I understand the 80 is a wider axle, and usually full-time AWD, so axle shafts, hubs, birfs, hub carriers and other misc. parts may be different.

Personally, I would start by measuring and comparing to the same vintage diesel version of your FJ73 - the HZJ73, rather than sourcing other series L/C's parts. Who knows what actual parts Toyota pulled off the shelves to bolt together your vehicle.

Hope that helps.

Post a picture up of the front diff

I don't know this so this is why I ask this; is this the light duty or heavy duty 70? Does it have the rounded front end or the more square front end? Once you know this, then at least you will know which cruiser type to search parts for. Usually the light duty cruiser drive train is the same/similar to other light duty 70 series, and conversely the same is generally true of the heavy duty 70, at least until the next major changes year, which I think for the heavy duty 70 series happened around 1999? If you post up the vin number also, then those that know more than you or I would be more able to help you out.

The front axle was taken off for a new coating. I just changed the pinion oil seal. My biggest problem is that there are no shops for parts on my island. I have to order everything online from the U.S.
When I take a bearing out, or rebuild the knuckles, I can't wait 3 weeks to get the new parts. So, I just need to order them in advance. When I look for parts, it's almost always for other types like 40's, 62's or 80's. The parts I can order for my FJ73, are almost all up to 1990.

:confused:So, I just want to know, what the difference is for, let's say, a knuckle or wheel bearing for a pre 1990 FJ73 and a 1991 model.

No VIN#, just Frame# FJ73-00077**
Model FJ73LV-MN 5 speed

Thanks Guys!

This is late model front axle, 1/90 onward known as HZJ 70series axle. Identify by the "square" housing of the axle. Most of the Landcruiser including Hilux share the same inner and outer bearing. ;)
However, the knuckle seal has slightly different in number of bolt. Late model has 6 of M6 bolts whereas the early 8 of M6.
