I see many threads on changing diff ratios so I presume re gearing is not that big of a deal,, My question though is do the diffs ever whine in these 80's and is it gears or bearing and how much of a big deal is it to fix.
tks

Any diff will whine if worn badly enough. Most of the time you can get away with just replacing the bearings although if the bearings are left too long before replacement the R&P might need changing too.
Does yours whine?
Most re-gear to allow for bigger tyres throwing the gearing out. If a new R&P is incorrectly installed the diff can whine as well.
If you need to replace bearings or re-gear you might as well throw in some ARB Airlockers too!:flipoff2:

This must be why we have the  smilies.

Im just curious ,, I have a slight whine but it could be something other than whine, like prop shaft In slowly eliminating

tks

Change out the diff fluids. See if that makes any diff...erence. :)

If you are unsure of the diff whine and think it could be a propshaft or something you need to eliminate what it is definitely not. The best way to check the driveshaft is to pull the the 8 bolts and remove it. While it is out check the unis for looseness and/or notchiness. Take the 80 for a lap around the block (with CDL engaged to give drive to the other diff) check to see if the whine is still there or not.
You need to eliminate all possibilities before major surgery. Last week a mate wanted me to pull his G/box because it making a whine in his FJ75. I couldn't give him a hand for a couple of weeks due to work but went around to have a look anyway. We took it for a test drive and I picked all the noise was a dry speedo cable. He was about to rebuild the G/box and he still would have the same noise a couple of thou later.
