I'm hoping to hear from mud users who have done a 12H-T swap into a US FJ-60. I've run into a problem with mine.

Here's the scoop. To determine the position of the front motor mounts I bolted up the engine, bell housing, and tranny. I stuffed them in and bolted in the tranny and crossmember. Since the tranny (H55) and bell housing are the same length as the FJ parts, I thought I could use the rear mounting point as the point of reference for the front mounts. Everything seemed to fit so I welded in the front mounts to match.

After I finished my T-case rebuild and reassembled everything, I went to drop it in and it wouldn't fit.

I'm not entirely sure what I did wrong. The engine now bumps the firewall before I can get it back far enough for the front engine mounts to line up. I modified the front mounts to bring the engine forward about 1.5" and now it seems to be in the right place. However, now I need to modify the tranny crossmember and drive shaft lengths.

This is the point where I realized something might not be quite right about this. I don't recal anyone stating that drive shaft mods are required for this swap. Are the HJ-60 (manual) and FJ-60 tranny crossmembers the same?

Is there anyone out there who can confirm?

I am not convinced they are the same, unless they come out of a HJ60 with a 5 speed.
Here is a pic of a HJ60 5 speed combo, and of the tranny crossmember under the truck. I can measure the position of the crossmember if you need me to, just give me an exact reference point that you want.

It's a relly bad pic .. from my cel phone but you get and idea about the position of the cross member .. H55F and BF1A combo

Thanks guys.

You're right Jan. The crossmembers are completely different. I might ask for a measurement if I need to.

Greg of G&S just informed me that I should fit and might just be really tight. There is one more thing I can do to squeeze the engine in. There is a heat shield on the firewall that I can remove. That will get me another half inch.

Too bad I already ghetto'd up my otherwise perfect engine mounts. I should have asked first.

What did you do to the mounts to be able to move them 1/2" I just installed a 2h/H55 last weekend into our 1985 FJ-60

The 51202-60072 is the transmission support member that crosses from one side of the frame to the other. It works for all FJ/BJ/HJ from 84/11 and up, then subs up to 51202-60073 in 86/11 for all MTM models mentioned.

The 51202-60071 (1982/84) does not sub up to the post 84/11 numbers.

So it will depend on the year FJ60 you have. Post 84/11 looks like all is the same.

How close is your engine to the firewall? Did you use the existing tranny crossmember, relocate any holes?

To mod my engine mounts I cut one of the 2F mounts in half and grafted one half to each of the HJ mounts. With some screwy torch work and welding I was able to move the mounting holes (or create two new holes) about 1.5" forward of my original holes.

Greg - Sounds like it really should work the way I had it. I'l bust out the heat shield and try again.

Thanks guys.

I used the FJ cross member and she sits 1-1 1/2" off the firewall

I finally got it in! The correct position even.

No crossmember or driveshaft mods required. I removed the firewall heat shield and moved things around just tiny amounts until it finally dropped in.

It's about 1" from the firewall. This is farther out than I thought it would be.

PITA doesn't describe it...

There is also some adjustment on the gear box mount to crossmenber bolts.
The holes in the crossmember are elongated and allow you to pull the tranny sideways.

When I did my swap I bolted the crossmember to the gear box/engine and bolted it to the car.
I bolted the engine mounts to the engine and lowered it . The HZJ75 frame bracket mounts have a lip that sits on top of the frame.
Where it sat was where it was welded.
I checked it agianst my HZJ75 I bought and I got it spot on:D

My swap was with an A440 (see thread in in signature) but one thing I was really surprised by was the angle the whole thing is designed in at. Its off by about 4 degrees from the frame it seems.
