Ok, so I plan on using my HZJ60 this summer for hiking trips. That means it's going to sit at trailheads for days at a time. Is there anything you'd all recomend doing to the rig to prevent it from being stolen? Im not to worried about break ins, as I wony leave anything inside the rig. Im worried about theft. For example, if it was a gasser I could remove the coil and take it with me. Im looking for something like that idea but diesel specific.

Thanks in advance.

Tom,

A kill switch will deter a lot of theives. Run a hidden switch somplace in the vehicle that can not be located etc. Wiring a kill switch in a diesel, I have no idea but it could work. Make sure your wheels are locked all the way right or left. That will make it more difficult to tow.

lastly. Put a lowjack in it. A key fob device has to be in the rig when started. If it is started or moves without it..It sends a signal to a band of ninjas who storm down and kick some theif ass that or the local authorties.

Its hard to stop a diesel being stolen but the hidden switch is the best idea, maybe a couple of them.
The best way is to have a fuel cut solenoid hidden along the fuel line. In the tank where it cant be seen would best if its possible.
However a a fuel line and filter with diesel maybe enough to get them a few miles away where they can safely work out the problem.

Ive been thinking about a piece of steel plate that fits around the clutch/brake pedal levers and touches the floor so neither can depressed.
Maybe a visible deterrent like a wheel clamp would also be good

Lots of of kick ass ninjas with throwing stars sounds good too:D and an explosive powered bamboo stick sharpened to a point under the drivers seat that turns a thief into a human kebab. You have to be careful with that one though:D

days at a time... pull all the glowplugs and put them in your backpack. Fawk the basturds.

no compression no runnie. Highly fawking unlikely they carry spare 1HZ glowplugs.

I would install a double throw double pole switch in a hidden place as mentioned. In line with the fule cutoff relay and the starter selonoid. A line lock selonoid on the brake line. I would install a few different options. Thieves are bold and will fuss with it with. Get creative.

You could do all the above plus pull the battery and hide it a distance away. This may be risky. But I have hidden out board motors when out on fishing trips.

Just a thought.

24 volt system. Two batteries.... To much dang hassle.... There has to be an easy answer to this question....

Shortly after my tranny swap, after a "quick" coffee stop, my Cruiser wouldn't start. I don't know how I noticed it, but after opening the hood, I saw a difference in grime level on a wire leading to a rubber boot to what I think is a switch on the vacuum canister. Sure enough, although the boot was firmly in place, the connection within wasn't. I reconnected and it started fine.

If the 1HZ in your 60 has a similar switch, you could disconnect it when hiking and re-install the boot so that it looks OK but won't let the engine start.

g'luck, -Steve

you can wire a switch into the engine fuse. this will allow the engine to turn over with the starter, start up, but it will die right away, as if it was broken.

also easy and effective is to remove a battery cable from the battery pole, and replace it with a fake cabel that ends nowhere. looks like all the cables are there, but no juice.

Take all the fuses with your in your backpack. And pull a couple relays too.

There little, 10 mm bolt and a connector...simple. A switch is good too. But like you said days alone in the bush.... I would make it totally undriveable.

Pull the drive shaft and the steering !!!!!!

I'm not sure in the 1HZ setup .. but in my 2H you can pull the starter plug .. quite easy .. the EDIC ( again in my case ) is other option ..

But the option that I really like if you really worried about theft, your t-case linkage, set it in N and disconect your lever of the linkage ..and boila !

connect the batteries in 12v mode, that should take care of trying to start a 24v system! or remove one battery and hide it!:grinpimp:

Rent a car and leave the c#^%*r at home (don't want to upset the cruiser gods.

Now that we've got really nicely set up 60's, it's a shame we have to think about having them taken.

Theft Deterents

I suggest that along with a hidden deterent, you also have something obvious like a club. With hidden stuff, they'll do alot of damage before they give up. That's my experience - 3 times now.
