Wayne, I disagree. Technologically speaking, DI diesels are more efficient. You can't compare the old 3B, for example, with the 1HD-T.
The fact is the 1HD-T is a much larger engine (by about 28%), has much higher output (165HP versus 92), with 6 cylinders has about 50% more parts to turn around, has to drive an auto trans instead of a manual and 4 wheels all the time instead of 2, for only a 15% energy premium over the 3B.
Not bad!
OK, maybe a fairer comparison would have been the 3B versus the normally aspirated version of the 1HD-T, the 1HZ. Or better yet, comparing the 3B with the 13BT...
