Hello all,

I have made the decision to move to a diesel vehicle and would have liked to have stayed with a LC (I currently have a 2001 LC with 250K miles on it). For years I have been waiting for Toyota to bring the diesel engine into the US and finally have given up.

I am open to options including buying a Canadian or foreign version and importing it but am concerned about parts and repairs.

I am looking for a vehicle roughly the same size as my LC and which is capable (not on paper but really capable) of going off-road. I don’t really want a pick-up truck or a soft-fuzzy SUV (like the BMW X5) :flamingo: .

I would love to hear others thoughts on acquiring a diesel LC or diesel alternatives.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

hmm diesels available in the US... VW Touareg, Mercedes ML, Audi Q7, BMW X5.

The only one I would even consider is the Touareg but its around $50K new and doesnt seem like it would be really good off-road.

Where do you live? If it is in CA you are going to have a much harder time (not impossible, but difficult) acquiring a diesel Cruiser.

If you have the $$$ for a conversion call Proffitt's Cruisers to discuss an engine conversion.

If you do search on this forum you will find months of reading material on this subject.

You want a new diesel 4x4 that can haul? Try this and mod to your specs. Canter FG4X4 | Mitsubishi Fuso

That's an impressive vehicle! Would that be classified under heavy-truck though? Not something of a daily driver kinda thing right? Lots of electronics?

Your going to hate this one, but a jeep might be an option. CRD liberty or Grand Charokee can be made to go off road with some light mods.

Something I've considered is the diesel Ford Excursion. It would make a great family cross country hauler!

It's on the other side of the spectrum from the Liberty!

We drive them on a car lic,the new ones are quite driver friendly, decent sound system good aircon, comfy seats. They need the right tyres up fronT and you need to play around with the pressure to get a good ride.
They do share a lot of electronics with cars today so they can reach emissions targets.

Their unladen mass is 2630KG. From the brochure (Mass (est.) includes oil and water but excludes spare wheel, tools & fuel) .You could probably add 250kg
Fuso - Canter 4WD

Well he might as well drool over the Hino GT1322 CREW CAB 4X4 with the 7.7 litre turbo intercooled diesel with
6sp.

These look really good with a set of offroad tyres and a motorhome body on the back :D

Isuzu 300 deserves a mention as well:cool:
