I am considering dooing a diesel conversion.
I am wondering what I should keep in mind when doing this. Also What do you think a fair price For a 1974 H series diesel with unknown mileage and rough running, Aussie Specs out of a troop carrier? Are they difficult and expensive to maintain? Also would this work with an 86 fj60 drive train? Or should I just Look The other way?
Thanks:confused:

I would stay away, unless it was free or close enought to feel free. An old engine is an old engine regardless of being diesel. Look for something not too old and able to buy parts for. If you want diesel bad and can't afford a different engine then go domestic..... unless you can test and make sure the H is ok...
Thanks:confused:

Please don't take this the wrong way but I can't find the icon for the guy poking the beehive

Having just read the thread HJ verses BJ ,which provided me with some great laughs ........there really isn't that much difference between the h and the 2h .Well OK there's that little capacity thing ,but as a plane mech' , surely you like the fact that the injector pump has it's own seperate oil supply in the H .No cross contamination of the oils .Toyota used to make some really cool stuff .

grumpy :D

About a $100. Being 32 years old with no evidence of any rebuild or engine report you would have to be an eternal optimist to think its a drive away.
Buy for parts or suitable for rebuilding only.

Even if its only a bad injector making it run rough, its unlikely to have a lot of life left in it.

LOL!!!! I meant not to poke a beehive...

I have no ill feelings for h or 2h engines. I don't know anything about them really.

But a rough running 1974 engine isn't what I would want to bother installing. Just too old.

If I was doing a conversion I would look for something sweet running and built in the 90's. Cause it is a lot of work to swap an engine.

Now a good 2H still might be a great swap engine. Don't get me wrong. But IMOP I would want newer. Something that parts are easy to get in NA. Or simply shipping.

I think your best bet would be to use a Cummins 4bt. It's the cheapest way to go, and you'll have parts forever.

You could always go to a Nissan UD Truck 6 (turbo and intercooler) or to the UD 4 if the 6 won't fit. The 6s have lots of hp and torque. They are also available in the US with a good network of parts. The UD 6 is also found in Nissan Forklifts but I don't think they came with the turbo and intercooler.:frown:

Thanks To all for their input. from what it sounds like I need to put a little more thought and research into a conversion of this magnitude. I heard about this h motor through a friend. It was on criagslist denver for $850.00. I thought great because we are able to use waste jet fuel from the planes we work on, and the motor would pay for itself in 10 months, but now I see what all is involved. If I decide to pursue this I will post my progress and pics as I go.
This website is awesome, and your help is invaluable.
Thanks

I imagine for 850, offer 500 bucks. It should be worth it.

I like the idea of using waste Jet fuel. I do the same. It's much better than having to dispose of it. Environmentally it is the same as diesel.

I cannot tell a difference between Jet A-1 and ULSD or LSD. Power is the same. But I do add fuel lube for the injection pump if I use jet. I think its dryer fuel. But I have no proof.
