Hello guys, I have a 1971 FJ40 with a converted engine and transmission which is from a 1981 BJ40 (2B; 4speed). I need a new fuel tank (diesel) that would suit this setup. Do you have any suggestions? The more options the better. If available, can you kindly give me outside dimensions of each tank and the links to these tanks for me to view and purchase if any? Would appreciate it very much. Many Thanks! By the way, would really like to keep the original fuel filling hole location of the 1971.

I would think you can use your original petrol tank. Not sure the 3B from '81 has a fuel return line, but
I don't think so. The later model 40 series had the tank under the floor RH side. Your '71 has fuel tank inside,
so you can't interchange with the later model tank.
Just make sure you remove all the petrol from the tank before you add diesel. Good luck

Do you have a detail history of your conversion to diesel on your fj40? I would be interested in also converting my 71 FJ40 to diesel.

I know you can use my rear fuel cell (nylon aux. tank) with diesel, but when you get the Centroid sender for it, you have to specify diesel otherwise the reading will be about 5% off.

Would anyone know where the 1979-1981 BJ40 fuel tank is originally mounted?

should be under the body ,right to left ,below the drivers and passenger seat, same as the gas version. I have an 81 BJ43 here. the tank looks to be the same as the 81 FJ40. Toyota still makes the gas version. Spectre of Canada also makes it and is of very nice quality. Contact "Beno" here on MUD . He'll tell you for sure of the availability. If you are looking for extra fuel any of the auxiliary tanks for the 40 that mount in the rear should work

Is your 2B wired 12V or 24V this will make a difference on which sender you need for what ever choice of tank you use.

My 1978 40 used to be a BJ40 diesel 24v now a 350 chev gasser 12v and I used the same fuel tank .you should be able to use your same fuel tank. I did need to change my fuel sender , blower motor. And wiper motor. And remove my voltage dropper from my guage cluster.

Ps .
I bought the vehicle without the drivetrain, I did not remove the diesel for a gasser. Lol. It is still registered as a BJ40 though.

Production of the BJ40 started in Sept. 1973 and had the fuel tank under the pas. seat. From '79 the tank moved to under the frame.

Drain your current tank, and fill it with diesel... Or get a stock replacement if it leaks.

I do have a Diesel tank thats mounted under floor at rear of my 40. However I'm returning the fuel entry from a modified rear location to it's original location beside the front passenger door (as per 1971 body). By doing this, the diesel tank I have in the rear is not practical anymore since you'd need to fabricate a long and winding hose from original fuel entry beside passenger door to the tank currently mounted under floor in the rear. Not a good idea... would make a lot of slushing noise too as I brake.

What Im hoping to do is find a tank that will sit under the passenger seat BUT under floor (i.e. outside the bodytub). I can modify the floor of my 40 easily since it's undergoing restoration and everything is bolted out.

Can I use the FJ40 1979-1983 tank (84liter) to fit under floor of my 1971 FJ40 (with 2B engine)? Or would the smaller FJ40 tank work instead?

Since you already have the rear tank why not french in a factory filler neck into the body to give it a more stock appearance. You can also use the underseat tank for additional fuel and range. You'll want to raise the filler as high as the stock filler which means encroaching into the fender well. If the filler is too low you will have issues with the cap leaking when you lean to the passenger side

Yes but that would mean adding another filler hole like you did in your rig. I would like to keep the stock filler in the same location as 1971. No relocations. Hence I need a tank that sit under the seat but underfloor unlike the original 1971 which had the tank inside the cab, under the seat.

You would then be looking at either the stock tank or the saddle tank that replaces it from Long Range Australia or Man-a-Fre.
Man-a-fre had discontinued this about a year ago but has announced plans to bring it back . I expect he will have them within a month
or two. Interest in big ticket items like fuel tanks dropped dramatically after the bank crash in 07 resulting in the discontinue of most of the available tanks and the withdrawal from the USA of Long Range Australia. With the discontinuance of the FJ62 tank by Toyota and the dwindling options in the USA Man-a-fre is trying to reintroduce the tanks one by one. The rear 40 is now available, and will have 60 and 62 tanks in a couple weeks
and is putting in an order for saddle tanks this week. if the market fares well he will keep producing after the first runs

I can confirm that you don't need an in-tank pump for the 3B. Man-A-Fre has a beautiful alum rear tank,
but you'd need to relocate filler hole. So just find an original tank that fits and away you go.

Here would be a 40 saddle replacement tank

Thanks for the photo. Looks great. However that would probably be my last choice if it came to that only because I'd like my tank to be outside my rig.

Would anyone have the outside overall dimensions of the FJ40 BJ4x fuel tank 1979-1983 ?? (as per attached)

Good day!
May I know if you have available FJ40 BJ4x Fuel Tank?
And how much is your best-discounted price for that item?
Thank you!
