I got this magnaflow (or is it?) Y-pipe and cat. Cost just north of $500. Ouch! I noticed it has soot inside the pipes. Is that normal, like they did factory testing with actual exhaust? I also noticed some scratches on the cat. At this point I'm wondering if I've been sent a previous return that was already installed once. What do you think? Those that have got these, is this normal?

IF you see no evidence on the flanges of it having been bolted up then I wouldn't be concerned. Scratches are cosmetic and will vary widely according to how roughly it was handled/shipped along the way. The 'soot' you see (unless it extends the length of the pipe) is probably just the shipping oil being burned off during the welding process.

Pretty much all metal tubing has a light coat of 'shipping oil' on it to prevent surface rust from forming. If not cleaned off before welding...it will leave a black residue. Same thing with the flanges, only plate material has what is know as 'scale' and if not cleaned off before welding...also will appear dirty.

Mine looked like that. But I only paid $330 😉

I hit mine mine with some exhaust paint to try and delay corrosion a but. Makes it a little prettier IMO too.
