My FJ62 intermittently won't start. Once every 2 or 3 weeks it turns over and over and over and won't start. No consistency...it's happened when it's cold and after it's ran all day. When the tank is full and low. Hot days and cool days. Then a few hours later it starts and runs for weeks with no issues.

I can hear a buzzing for a couple of minutes near the passengers feet under the hood. Not sure what that is.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

Do you have a factory service manual (FSM)? On this model the FSM has a great troubleshooting flow chart in the EFI section. Start there!

Off the cuff, I'd recommend checking for fuel flow/pressure when this happens, as your fuel pump could be failing.

Tell us more about this buzz. Does it sound like air or liquid slowing escaping, or is it an electrical sound?

No I don't have a factory service manual...I'll have to get one.

Sound is more electrical vibration, doesn't sound like air. Very faint. Only heard it because I opened the hood and was poking around the distributor when it wouldn't start.

Couldn't get it started last night then it just starts up this morning no problem. Will probably not do it again for a couple of weeks. That's why it's so hard to track.

Thanks!

Best of luck. These intermittent problems are part of the package with Toyota's first attempt at fuel injection in the Land Cruiser line. While you're searching for a hard copy, fellow MUDDER @Trollhole graciously offered up a collection of digital FSM'S, the link is here:

For Sale: - 40, 50, 60, and 80 series FSM for a hell of a price.

There is a 3FE pdf there you'll learn to love. Keep us updated!

definitely sounds like an electrical connection (or component) on it's last legs. Grounds are a great culprit, i believe there's a major ground off the ecu in the foot area of the passenger side

Check the fusible links. The buzzing could be a weak relay.

UPDATE: Replaced the plugs, distributor cap and rotar (which was cracked) and ran a fuel pressure check. Problem has not recurred...not sure if that means it's fixed though since this problem rears it's ugly head every couple of weeks. Emission module (I think that's what it is) gets hot so that's the next thing to check according to the mechanic.

Glad you got it fixed. A side note on buzzing sounds, the fuel pump is in the on position with the key turned to accessory.

I one troubleshooted a friend's FJ62 that woundn't start. Went through the entire electrical / fuel system.

Ended up being a bad connector at the distributor wires/plugs. Oddest situation I have come across.

Problem came back. Now it's isolated to a cable, something to do with emissions. I pulled it, blew on it and plugged it back in and it started up. Who knows?

EGR valve sticking open, is one of the most intermittent highlights in the Cruiser lexicon.

Does the 62 have a fusebox like the 4Runners? 4Rs have a horrible intermittent electrical bug on the connector from bottom of fuse box to Alt/Batt.
