how hard is it to install a detroit into my 3rd member?

Set up is pretty much like installing any ring gear on any new carrier. If you are reusing the old ring gear, I'm betting that you don't have to reset the pinion depth to get good tooth contact. Just set the backlash and the carrier preload and you're done. If you are installing it in the rear, C-clip installation is a little different, but I don't know the details.
