How can I tell if my engine is suffering from detonation? And if it is, how can it be fixed?

higher octane fuel and/or adjust the timing. Don't ask me to what unless its a SBC, in that case its 36-38* total advance.

If you listen for It, you should be able to hear a motor ping.
Another sign of too much advance is if your motor diesels when you shut it off.

I've had the same problem when I don't use premium unleaded gas. It shouldn't be a problem with a 7.8:1 compression ratio but it is. If I back off the timing, the engine runs hotter so It's definitely a trade off.

I run with the stock timing and with premium gas...just the cost of running a cruiser .

I have been running premium. The engine was also pinging with low grade.

So, detonation, is just pre-ignition or ignition at the wrong time. I'm good then.
