1st and reverse go out together. Sounds like you lost the clutch pack and it's time for a replacement / rebuild.

Can you visibly see your torque converter lock up when you reach cruising speed and let off the gas a bit?

The FSM has a few checks to perform before you scrap the A440F.

1. Kick down cable adjusted correctly?
2. Proper fluid level measured when the vehicle is up to operating temperature.
3. Drain fluid, pull trans pan, and inspect the reusable metal screen for debris. New gasket needed to re-install

You say mechanically stock drivetrain. What tire size do you have? If larger than 30 inches, did you regear your differentials? Do you have a transmission cooler besides the stock one in the bottom of your radiator? Is your stock cooler being used in the bottom of your radiator? Small details could help us visualize what's going on.

I looked Rodneys party trick up on YouTube and nobody has posted anything about this yet. Somebody has to be the first.
I did it on my last hj61. It works, but it is a stressful move. ;) It just clicks a few times. It did in fact help the tranny. be sure to drop the pan and clean real good.
