OK, I asked this before but didn't get an answer (that I recall). I go out this morning, ice on the windshield, crank up the truck, turn on the defrost and get AC on the windshield. That ain't helping.... Can this feature whereby when you turn turn on the defrost you get AC be defeated? I know you can't just turn the AC off, tried that. It does go away if you put half to the windshield, half to the floor, but that's half to the windshied. I want it all!

On a 97 fake 40th....

Thanks,

TJK

The purpose of the A/C during defrost is to provide de-humidified air to the windshield. This helps to prevent fogging. The placement of the heater control lever will determine the temperature of the air.

As the engine begins to warm, you will have nice dry, hot air blowing at the inside of the windshield!

I don't think the AC comes on below a certain temp. I'd like to have a manual cutout for the AC, wouldn't be hard to do.

Or a fuse?

Well, that's quite odd, but ok, and thanks.

Notably, our 1994 80 series didn't do this, nor does our 100 series. Nor did my 55 or my 62.... ;)

My 95 doesn't run the ac if the ac button is not depressed, period. Doesn't matter if I'm using the defrost or not. Yours may be different?

But boydmick is right. You normally would want the AC running to de-humidify the air shooting on your window. In situations where it's below freezing, however, there probably isn't too much humidity in the air, so running the ac may not be necessary.

On my earlier Toyotas you could turn off the AC I think then they made it blind to the operator by just turning it on but not the light. It really makes a big difference in how well the defrost woks. I'd leave it alone.

Alright, I'll give it a shot (like I have a choice). Been fine without it for 24 years now....

'Yepper, dat's wut dem dare follks yused to say about dem dare computers.

Notice what happens when you turn on defrost in the summer too their Sparky :flipoff2:

To get rid of humidity on the inside of the glass? Here in GA the RH goes to 100% most nights in the summer and water will condense on the inside of the glass, especially if it is raining or you have several people with you.

On my LX the AC will only come on with defrost if the AC is enabled, maybe finally found a reason to have the auto climate control?

Removing the belt is a nice idea it may help extend the lift of the clutch bearings also?

If it's raining, yes, I agree. Otherwise my windows are rolled down in the summer.

another benefit of running the AC when the defrost is on is that it spins the compressor up at least once in a while. this may be a topic of debate but i've heard it said that if you use the AC everynow and then it will last longer.

Your 100 series may do it even though you don't know it... On my '04 Honda it turns on the AC w/defrost on, but it does not turn the AC light on, there is no way to know from looking at the controls. There is a way to defeat it on my Honda by pushing the HVAC buttons in a certain sequence.

Well, I did check to see if the light came on but I didn't pay attention to what was coming out of the vent. Good point.
