Gents,

I'm back in Japan and have the opportunity to purchase a 1992 HD81 or HZJ77 which I'll be able to import upon my return to the States. Both are the same good condition and similar prices. I love the cool factor of the 77 but feel like the 81 has the better engine. What would you do and why?

Hey brother- good to see you up on Mud again! Don't know if you remember, but met you at the RLC meeting awhile back...anyways, I say go with the HD81...still the cool factor for sure and a lot easier procuring parts and accessories as well...that diesel would sure be nice to have and they're still unobtainium for most of us in the states....

Buy 'em both, drive them around a bit and decide which one makes you smile more. Then sell the other one :)

1991 HDJ81 VX!

HDJ81 was intercooled? In for pics of the 77!for

Yes, obviously aftermarket, just wanted to make sure that's what I was looking at.

The HDJ81 is the better truck between the two, based purely on objective criteria.

HZJ77 doesn't have a direct injected or turbocharged engine and is leaf sprung. The 80 is a much more modern and comfortable vehicle, and is easier to source parts for in North America.

not unobtainium for long now that the 1990's are march'n in. there's one on ebay right now ;)

81's are close to half the price of a comparable 70. Gasser 80's are cheaper than used 660cc Jimny's...

Old (nice shape) HZJ76 and 77's are going for near the same price as the brand new 70's.

The cruiser market is a bit F'ed up right now..
