Debating on going to electric fuel pump

I have a beater car with a hacked wired fuel pump. The only issue with the hack is that the pump is running when the ignition is on. The signal wire could be from the coil, but, the starter is only on when you have the key in the 'start' position.
From the factory, the fuel pump is turned on by ignition and a sensor monitoring for oil pressure. That way, the fuel stops flowing in the event of a lack of oil pressure, or the event of an accident when the ignition is still on, and but the motor isn't spinning. You might get the sensor installed for a more complicated circuit, but, I don't know of where to find the write-up.

I use an electric fuel pump, and use an inertia switch. These are available from Summit, Amazon etc…. These were installed as original equipment on like 90’s vintage Fords….they trip at about 10 to 15 G. Once tripped, they need to be manually reset…just push the button.

Other things to think about, electric fuel pumps are a bit more susceptible to vapor lock, so keep it out of the engine compartment.

Remember the phrase K.I.S.S.. If it's simply a bad factory fuel pump then replace it, it is the simplest solution. Adding an electronic fuel pump adds electrical problems into your fuel delivery problems and increases the number of failure points to diagnose in the future.

If you were going to EFI than an electronic pump would be a necessary change. If sticking with carb, replace the defective manual pump, no other modifications necessary.

As Byron said, don't do it unless you have to (EFI). The factory mechanical pumps work great. Practically bomb-proof and so simple to change if there is ever an issue.
