It all started as a simple job. .. replaced a rusty tank with a poly. Could
not get the fuel guage to respond to new (or old) sending unit. All I did
was fiddle with the ground and swapped sending units.

Then, the 79 2F refused to start. No spark coming out of the coil. Replaced
the coil. Still nothing. I have been reading my brand new Haynes manual
and they have very little to say about the (stock) electronic ignition that I have here.

Is there a way to test the igniter? I really hope that this isn't the problem
since they are big bucks but I'm kinda stuck here.

Haynes

There is a way to bypass the ignitor, look in the Haynes manual, it describes how to do it. Check out CruiserParts.net or fjparts.com if your ignitor is bad.

You can't bypass the igniter on a fully-electronic setup like what's in your 79. The bypass only applies to semi-electronic setups.

Assuming you have checked for spark and got none, check for 12volts at the coil + terminal, for starters. Also, if the igniter gets warm to the touch with the key on for 5-10min its probably working okay.

Yes, Haynes talks like this is a routine bypass and makes no mention
at all about the fully electronic ignition that was standard in the
later years.

I've got 12V at the coil. When my son tested it (while cranking) he said he thought that the signal should pulse ... I don't know enough about it to know
that, but there was definately power.

PO told me not to leave the key on or it will fry the coil. I was hoping
there was a way to test the igniter.

Thanks much

Did you check to be sure the little ground strap on the side of the cage that holds the coil is proplerly grounded? Clean up that contact regardless. I did exactly what you did and neither worked until I fixed it.

Thanks Rob ... I don' t think I have any sort of "grounding strap"
on my 79 ... I thought bolting the bracket (that holds the coil) to
the firewall is what was grounding the igniter/coil assembly ?

Thanks Dianna ... that was a thread that I had checked out but somehow
stopped before the specific talk of testing the igniter started. I will try
that.

Thanks everyone for their help.
