Hey there.

I have a 1990 HDJ 81 that I've had for a few years. Since I got it the day time running lights have never worked and I need to get a vehicle inspection done. Can anybody leave me in the right direction on how to fix these lights?

Thanks.

I just moved from BC to Alberta and I'm trying to import it so I can get insurance.

Yes, DRL's are required here in Canada for any out of province inspection (retrofitted for anything that didn't have it as standard equipment).

Just like you were told in your thread in the diesel section, HDJ81's did not have daytime running lights from the factory.

They are simple to add.

Canadian Tire has the kit for 50 and they will install it for another 50 or so when they do your inspection.

Don't bother with it, there is a few places around that don't really care about that anymore. They just want to see that the brakes, suspension, bushings, all the important stuff is in good working order.

OP is moving to AB though, and he'll need an OOP inspection to get insurance on this truck.

I have my DRL's wired up to the corner lights, they are on anytime there is ignition power. I've previously had them wired to the turn signals under the headlights with a relay, so they are on as DRL's, and flash with the turn signal. I'm not a wiring guy, so I can't give you step by step instructions on how to achieve this.

Thanks for the help. It looks like a pretty ez fix. I'm just going to buy the DTR module from canadian tire.

I do have a mother problem tho. My hazard light do not work. Has anyone els had this problem?

I recently bought my HDJ81 from Vancouver and brought it to Calgary... had to do OOP and daytime running lights (by Pro Active which is the Calgary Land Cruiser shop). My DRL's stopped working almost right after they installed. PITA. Would suggest going back to stock. More reliable, how Mr. T wanted it, and the government won't be checking your truck again after that.

With that being said, would love to know how to revert back to stock...

The police could easily check your truck if they see it with no DRL's though, not like it would be hard to spot. I don't know about out west, but you get demerits with tickets for equipment non-compliance issues here in MB.

This is true.

Unfortunately, this is hillbilly country so getting away with it would be fairly easy in AB. There are a bazillion vehicles on the road here that will more than likely be non-compliant.

I am a bit of a wiring guy and when I imported my LX from the States, I bought the kit from Lordco for $45 and never did install it - returned it instead when I found out Crappy Tire would do it. Saved me from having to figure it out. 2 years later still works.

They didn't screw the module down - just tucked it in a tight spot and its still there.
