Thanks for the answers on my previous post, I have another question. I use synthetic oil and change my oil about every 4500K miles; I have noticed for the last few changes that my oil seems darker than usual. Someone informed me that the TRD air filter I am using may be letting more dirt through than a paper filter, and this may be the cause. What do you guys think?

possible I guess. Try paper next time. On the 80 list, it seems to be the consensus that one can't beat the OEM filter...
(use a bigger font, dang it:) )

I agree. Cut open a FRAM and then a genuine Toyota.
The results would scare you. Even just compare weight, which one do you think is working better? I'll bet on the Toyota one every time. What type of filter do you use?

It could also be the TRD air cleaner. Does it use oil like the K&N?
I much prefer paper filters. Less power, but more filtering.

You could also try doing your oil change after 3,000 miles instead.
I do mine every 3,000 miles (5000km).
I used to have a Suzuki LJ80, which revved high. I changed it every 2000 miles or less.

Overkill? Maybe. But I firmly believe regular oil changes helps the life of an engine.
And helps keep tolerances within spec longer.

Cheers,
Nick

Nospell, what oil filter are you using?

Try a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) to see if you are getting dirt in. The change could be the brand/type of oil you are running now. Even if you haven't changed they are constantly reformulating. Dirty oil isn't necessarily a bad sign. The dirtier oil could be cleaning grime left behind by earlier less effective oils. The UOA will tell the story.
