Well, everyone here seems to talk mostly about the 4.2 engines (which I love by the way), and big heavy 3.9 litre 4 pots. But I've been cutting my teeth on vnt turbos with the 1VD V8 engines and the 3 litre 4cyl 1KD engines. (And both of those couldn't be more different)

I can tell you first hand that vnt definately are far superior to wastegated types but are a real headache to modify. This is primarily due to metallurgy of the vnt system and considerations regarding mass flow all going through the turbine.

So, I have posted dynos many times regarding the 4.2 engines and thought I should do the same on the 1KD.

These engines are in standard form:

Power: 127kW (92-96kW/112-129hp) at wheels
Torque: 343nm

Here is 2010 Toyota Hilux before and after. End result 216hp at wheels! With simple mods and standard airbox!

Usually we see 92-96kW (123-129hp) at wheels on dead standard vehicle.

Before: 3" exhaust, HPD front mount intercooler;

- 98.6kW (132hp) at wheels

After: Gturbo Stage 2 turbo, Gturbo custom programmed chip;

- 161.2kW (216hp) at wheels

Runs start at 1700rpm, and boost is 28psi

1hp = 0.746kW
1kW = 1.34hp

And here is 2005 1KD with 239whp (standard was 119hp).

Mods: Gturbo stage 2 turbo, HPD front mount intercooler, 3" exhaust, Gturbo custom programmed chip, hi flow injectors.

This is running 34psi boost.

Many sources say 45psi is upper boost limit before you need to change head gaskets and replace head bolts with studs

Here is a photo of a Gturbo stage 3 upgrade. It's seen 280whp but unfortunately I only have a 250whp result available.

With the vnt system and turbines changed, we have found great results with great torque right off the bottom.

Grame ... this makes me wonder, factory EGT and boost numbers for those engines .. ?

1KD-FTV like 20 PSI .?

plenty of those engine here running " performance " chips have a lot of safe mode ( crawl mode ) situations when pushed to the limit .. are you concern about that issue .. ?
 
Hi, that issue only happens when it's not tuned right.

It's simply not an issue for me.

Turbo is safe for 18psi. It also only has 270 degree thrust bearing like CT26, but design is superior. Factory boost is 12psi.

I can tune for any boost without codes, no problem. In the past, every now and then codes might occur, but not now. The dyno posted 161rwkw, that's over 70% torque, 60% power, boost 28psi with good intercooler, it's very nice and no codes in any driving style

that's the temp you'll see at exhaust manifold q idle .?

so crawl mode / codes are detonated by AFR ..? ( getting to rich .? )
 
That'd be the shape of the bearing. Some are 270 and have a section cut out, some the bearing is a full 360 degree disc. (There may be others, I wouldnt know)

Hi everyone, I’m from Brazil and a happy Hilux 1KD owner. I’m impressed how you are tunning your engines. I want a turbo upgrade and looking here I concluded Gturbo stage 2 wanna be perfect for me. I talked with gturbo dealer but they don’t send to Brazil. Has any alternative to Gturbo stage 2 that I can found easily (eBay, etc)?
