I'm trying to price compare. Anyone know what Cruiser Dans knuckle rebuild kit costs? Also, what does it include? Im mainly wondering if it includes thrust washers and the c-clips for swapping birfs left to right.

I don't recall the price of the kit but I'm sure Dan or Onur will post up. The last kit I purchased from the guys did have the birf c-clips but did not include the thrust washers. I'm willing to bet $$ they stock thrust washers and all you'll need to do is ask for two and they'll be in you goody bag of parts.

Don't have the price numbers but you could call America Toyota and ask them; those small parts are just a few extra bucks. IME they have all the parts required in stock.

The basic package does not contain thrust washers. I suggest new ones when changing bearings. We can add them regardless. The basic package is ~247 bucks (with trunion bearings) and it's about 3 bucks for thrust washers.

Ok, I'll just call tomorrow as I have a decent sized list (in addition to the knuckle rebuild kit) and may as well order it all at once.

Hmm, does $247 include wheel bearings? Is there any real advantage of the oem kit over the marlin crawler kit on sale now for $109?

I didn't know that Marlin had a kit for the 80's

Yes Dan's price includes wheel bearings. (about 95% sure)

Well OEM is almost always going to be more expensive because it is almost always a higher quality item and toyota has millions in R & D to recoup from when they originally made the product.

Now it is really up to do what you want to use, most on here use OEM but Marlin has always made sure the quality of the product he sells is good.

By the time you add the price of good quality wheel bearings to the $109 kit, you will be getting close to the OEM price. I'd imagine the OEM trunion bearings are better quality as well. The trunion bearings I got in the kit were pretty cheap. I'd imagine they are china made, as they had no bearing numbers or identification on them. Don't forget to add the price of the Marlin axle seals on top of the kit, which are about $12 a piece IIRC.

knuckle kit

I just installed the kit from Marlin (bought when on sale a month ago for $95) included koyo trunnion but no wheel bearings or thrust washer. sourced the wheel bearings from autozone (timken) for way less the OEM, 1/2 the cost. bought new thrust and spindle nut kit from Marlin cheap 7-8 bucks. The only thing I can say is that the new spindle nut would not fit the 54mm socket I purchased from Marlin. Luckily the old nuts were fine...doing the rear this weekend and purchased the same bearings from autozone and seal kit from Slee. we'll see how it goes.

OEM certainly costs more but you do not have to "see how it goes" on a Sunday when you have to put the truck back together and drive it to work on Monday.

I'll second what CDan said; there's nothing more frustrating that being in the middle of a job and then finding you don't have the correct part or having a part that doesn't fit as it should, and even worse if an aftermarket part fails and you end up walking home and then doing the job all over again. With OEM parts and American Toyota parts department you will get the right stuff. IMHO seeing that OEM wheel bearings can last 200,000-300,000+ miles it's a false economy to save a few bucks now for something you may never replace again. The way I look at it the amount I might save by using aftermarket parts for the front end service could be less than the cost of a couple tanks of gas. (Disclaimer: I'm not a paid spokesman for American Toyota, just a happy customer).

just say'in "I believe timken will hold up as well as Koyo for half the cost" $50 a bearing seems insane to me $400 for front and rear total. We'll see how the timken hold up is what I meant. Also, two bearings I replaced (front inner) were timken to begin with. They looked as good as the Koyo outers. Bearings are something that should be inspected/serviced annually anyway. Used the $200 savings to help with the kick ass drilled and slotted rotors from Slee.

Koyo inners are $29.61 each, outers, $26.22 each. So it's $223.32 to go all the way around the truck, not 400 bucks.

Timkin bearings are fine, Toyota used some during production.

Ultimately it is your money and you can do with it what you will. These guys are merely speaking form experience that going with OEM gives you added insurance that you have exactly the right part install and don't need to "see how it goes".

that's funny cause when I called you you said "$50 a bearing and you need two per side" my reply was "really that seems crazy expensive" to which you replied "you're driving a 50 thousand dollar vehicle" and you are right tiz my money $$$ and time

IIRC Robbie had commented to me that Toyota had spec'd both Koyo and Timken bearings on different 80's through the model life-cycle. Both are top-quality far beyond the knock-off junk out there.

Interestng, I don't generally round like that. I wonder where I was.

Dan - Is that a per side cost or does that include both sides? Thanks.

This was due to import tariffs. Toyota imported Timken bearings from the US, manufactured the vehicle and shipped it back to the US with Timkens...
