If I remember correctly there is some kind of insurance prohibition against the official trail leaders spotting for that obstacle. If you do it, you are not doing it as part of the official run... or something along those lines.

Nailed it! But I enjoy watching people go up the Gate while eating a PBJ :)

There exists video evidence that I would (stupidly) do the opposite of your spotting directions anyway... 'driver... Driver... DRIVER!... DRIVER!!... DRIVER!!!' :bang::bang::bang::rofl:

So I know @Markuson has done hells gate before. Anyone else planning on tackling it this year? Seems like it tends to get a little tippy at the top for ifs rigs and very spotter dependent.

I’ve done the Gate with my 200 twice…and yes. -All about line/spotter and staying level via staying mostly level-to-high-on-passenger. I got away with a terrible spot first time years ago… Second through no problem, but ended up turning sround after to winch two drivers behind me, as they were popping up/back toward the top.

Would def do it again as its interesting & fun… I’d say maybe 2 or 3 driver out of 15 in a group usually try it….so absolutely no need or pressure to do it if not inclined.

Some people actually find the drop IN/down to the obstacle equally hnnerving…because you simply cannot see the drop from driver. Just keep nose pointed straight down on the drop in…get a tallish spotter whose high hands you can see and drop in is no problem.

you mean like this @Markuson ? I don't actually have any photographic proof that I did it, but I did. staying high on the passenger side is key. My first buddy struggled so much in his 100 ( 20 minutes or so), that as soon as we got him up, I ran down, hopped in my 200 and just hit it. It happen so fast, I think I was shocked. And then my buddy in his 80 was struggling and out came the winch!

Yep. Something like that… :)
HG can either seem like piece-o-cake & no big deal—with a good line… Or a big & scary thing—with a bad line…**OR…with a “good line” that’s just a wee bit off it a couple spots.

HG is a little unusual because if you see a smoothly driven line…it looks like a no brainer. But in several spots, a line thats a little off can lead to trouble.

Even the best drivers and decent spotters can follow a line that seems right, but ends up awkward.. From driver, you literally can’t see key parts once at them, so it can sketchy unexpectedly.

Below, you can’t see my truck, but you can see my winch line pulling at the passenger-side recovery of a buddy near the top. If people do roll over backward (houtube), this is the spot it happens.

He’s a good driver too… Just on a line that was a little off, & using a spotter who is also good. Just one o small-margin things that keep us all on our toes.

I was fortunate to have woody spot me. My eyes were fixed on him the whole way. He then did escalator after this and drove right up it (2nd picture). The vehicle right after him flopped almost on their side and he helped spot them out

Just a heads up for those SoCal and AZ folks that are planning to head up through Monument Valley, you may need to do some route planning to get around the Tunnel Wildfire that has 89 closed. Hoping the fire gets under control quickly and they can reopen before I head up on Tuesday, but I'm making contingency plans just the same.

Right now its just a minor detour, but I could see it getting worse and adding an hour or hours to the trip. If 89 remains closed there is quite a bit of traffic that would need to detour through some pretty limited infrastructure. Hopefully it's not an issue by next week, but we've seen these things get a lot worse before they better lately.

I'm giving it some thought, but will likely be a gametime decision. I'm doing Hell's on Thursday so it will likely depend on how I'm feeling about potentially ruining the rest of my trip. That said, I really want to. If I remember correctly there is some kind of insurance prohibition against the official trail leaders spotting for that obstacle. If you do it, you are not doing it as part of the official run... or something along those lines.
There is no insurance prohibitions, it is 100% up to the trail leader to include this or exclude it. This is usually based on what they believe is in the best interest of the group.

Just an obvious reminder... I went out to torque my skid plate fasteners this morning and just generally check things out, and found that two of my skid fasteners were missing. Fortunately no issue with that as I had extras on hand, but I was glad that I gave it the once over with enough time to grab some new fasteners if needed. Get under there and tighten stuff up!

All loaded up and ready for an early Sunday departure. Going to take the scenic route and do highway 50 across Nevada. The kids probably can't do a 12 hour drive so we are going to break it up in 2 days and stay in Ely.

The 37"s on the 80 make the 200 look small, even though the 200 is way bigger. Tongue weight is 770#, so a little heavy but I didn't want to put the 80 back any further. Airbags did not arrive in time for me to install, same with the 12.5ga LRA aux tank. Oh well, lots of gas stops.

Looking forward to doing a few trails in the 200 as well. See you all in Moab!

Didn't want any of that Arizona dirt mixing with the Utah dirt, so I stopped by the truck spa for the first time in ages. Departing tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, camping at Monument Valley and probably grabbing some grub at Swinging Steaks in Mexican Hat tomorrow evening if anyone is cruising that way. I'll be monitoring 146.460 and beaconing APRS. Call sign is KJ7MIT-9.

so much FOMO right now:bang:. the worst part, I got in, I Registered, then my wife informed me about an event conflict that was a family must. I cancelled with the event planners, 1week later my wife informs me she was mistaken :bang: ...... Have fun everyone and be safe! Nothing gets me hyped up more than more than geeking out on a bunch of Landcruisers and nerding out with fellow enthusiast. Hopefully I'll make it next year.

Wow, what a phenomenal week. Great meeting some of you out there. Not a lot of words can sum up how great wheeling for 6 days in a row out there was.

Kokopeli, Top of the World, Poison Spider, Fins n Things and Hells Revenge did not disappoint at all.

Pretty much went after it and took all the hard lines and went after it. People were very impressed by the 200, the lockers definitely made a big difference.

And of course, it all culminated with Hells Gate. I was so pumped up after Hells on Saturday that I stopped at Milts for a burger after and then knocked out the 11 hour drive home same day.
