Hey guys - thanks for the info. I did hear from the trail leader today, but it's not Robbie this time.

Good to know about the location for the start of the trail.

I guess I need to figure out how to carry some gas. I removed the factory roof rack so the Cruiser would fit in the garage. I am open to ideas - maybe I can somehow strap some cans on the back bumper/spare tire? I think it's best to avoid carrying it inside the vehicle - just stating the obvious there?

Ellen's not going to make it on this trip - just me this time.

Ash - good idea on the air filter!

Evan,
It's been, three years (?) since I ran it with Robbie.
I'm sure you'll be hearing from you trip leader - until you do:
I carried an extra 10 gallons of gas that I did use - I may have squeaked into Moab without but nice to have the peace of mind. There are no gas stops.
Rabbit Valley is west of Fruita on I70 - the exit is just before the state line. There is a primitive campground.
It's a great trip! Nothing too technical on our run - lots of varied terrain, fun camping and meeting folks.
Is Ellen going?

I agree with Juan, extra fuel is a good idea for this run. This is a great trail, you'll love it. I'd pack another air filter that way you can have an offroading filter vs hwy filter. Following a large group will produce a fair amount of dust and unless you can blow out your filter at the end of each day, having a second filter is a good idea.

Evan,

I have a NATO gas can that doesn't leak so you can store that inside w/o fumes.

You can borrow my INTI rack and a couple of SCEPTER cans.

That would be awesome. I think I'd rather have the gas on the roof. I'm sure it would probably be fine, but it makes me a little nervous to carry fuel inside the vehicle. We'd have to figure out a good trade, but we can probably start with some cerveza and Mexican food to make it worth your while.

I don't like carrying gas cans inside. One drunk coming the other way and you're toast. Literally.

Full gas cans don't usually explode but if you can toss them on top, I'd do so.

I have a couple gas cans you can use.

Ron - Thanks for the offer, but it sounds like what Mike's got will be enough for me.

I'll watch for you in Moab, but we won't be off the Kokopelli trail until Thursday afternoon/evening (after starting in Colorado on Tuesday morning! :steer:). Should be a blast!

If I recall, you'll be at Slickrock campground, so I'll look for you over there after I've had a long hot shower.

"Exploding" is not usually the problem - a roll, a puncture, leak, spark...

I have unit 64, which I believe is near the showers/bathrooms.

A message for Steve (Lurch) -

Didn't you do a video for the Kokopelli Trail? I searched for a while with no luck. If you could point me to a link, that would be awesome. It will help get me fired up for the trail!

Evan

It's a little shorter via 550, but you can go faster on I-40 so it's about a draw...

I think 550 is a better, smoother route than the part between Gallup and Farmington.

Sort of...I started but never finished :-( I upgraded my software but never figured out how to transfer the original edit to the new version of software.

Need to figure out how to clone myself...I'm about to have another weeks worth of footage and I still 5 days worth of footage from last year at Moab I never finished editing.

Which way is faster, west out of I-40, then North to Farmington, or via us550 ?

Gallup is faster if you live near I-40. 550 is faster if you live in RR.

Yep, as I said depending on the speed you want to drive. If you want to limit to 75 550 is faster even if you live near I-40, if you want to drive no more than 4.9 above the limit. If you want to drive over 80 and spend the extra on gas then I-40 is faster, if you live south of Montaño or so. You will be saving a *lot* on gas by going 550 either way - in a Cruiser.

So, the answer is....

If just depends.

P.S. When you go through Cortez there is a Sinclair station on the east side of the road that sells ethanol free gasoline - right in the middle of town at the intersection of Hwy's 491 and 160.
