Back up to the top. Who is leaving Wed and going through Gallup? My objective is to leave around 7am and let folks catch up.

All right, time to bump this thread alive again. We've got Moab coming up soon. Wednesday, April 30 will be the travel day for me. When are others heading up?

I will likely plan an early morning departure (maybe 7:30-ish) to allow for getting to the inspection by 3:00 or so. Last year, I was pushing the limits and then ran into road construction outside of Moab which slowed me down even more. I think I got there at 4:55 and they were only supposed to be open until 5:00. I'd like to allow a couple of extra hours this time.

I think the route that takes I-40 to Gallup and then north through Shiprock seems a quick and easy way (I know Jon has also used that route), but I would consider heading up 550 if others are heading up at the same time.

I hope we'll see trail assignments soon. Looking forward to it! :bounce:

Jon,
I am leaving early on Wednesday. With the new gears, I should be able to go through the mountains much easier than before so either way is OK with me.

Hey Jon -

I will leave Wednesday and plan on going through Gallup. I am also planning an early departure. If I can get organized early enough that morning, I may meet you at your house at 7:00 and follow along. Otherwise, I will find you on the road. I don't mind taking things a little slower - I'm sure it will help the gas mileage a little bit.

Anyone else up for an early departure on Wednesday - west on I-40 and north through Shiprock?

Great. I gave the truck a little more timing last night so I should be able to do 65-70 on the downhills. :grinpimp:

It's looking good!

UGH! Just when you think she is ready to go the front main seal gives out. Guess I'll be on my back tonight after work.

Better to fix it in your garage than on the trail or the side of the highway!

I'm leaving either Tuesday night or Wed morning and driving from SF through Pagosa. Looks like I'm driving the 40 and will be solo this year. I may convoy with George and his bro, or if I'm lucky, I'll get to load the 40 on his 30' trailer. Camping at Canyonlands CG, see you guys there.

David -

We'll watch for you up there. Haven't seen you and the family in a while (I know you'll be by yourself up there).

Did you already list your trail selections here?

Evan

Me and the boys will depart my place Monday morning, heading toward Canyon de Chille. We'll eventually wind up in Moab on Thur or Friday night. See ya!

It got worse last night. I stripped the crank nut. Jim has another one waiting for me at AT. The plan is to weld a socket to the nut and see if I can't bust it loose. This sucks.

That does suck. If worse really comes to worse, you are welcome to ride along in an 80 to Cruise Moab. I know that's not what you signed up for, but I guess it's better than not going at all.

I know you're motivated to get it done - good luck! Keep us posted.

First attempt. I used a 3/4" deep impact socket I had lying around. I didn't notice it was 3/8" drive. GRRRRRRR. I snapped it off at the welds. Off to Sears I go.

Second attempt. I used a 19mm standard impact socket, 1/2" drive. I welded that bastid on real good. It took all the strength I had pulling on the long breaker bar. I was very relieved when it busted loose. I suspect the heat from the welder helped.

Now, on to the seal.

Good work! I figured that talk of being a passenger at CM would get you motivated.

I hope that you're past the worst of it at this point.

The 1FZ-FE crank bolt goes on at 300+ ft-lbs (307 IIRC) Dan has a shiny new 3/4" Snap-On torque wrench. Most 1FZ-FE guys break the crank bolt using a 3/4" breaker bar chained to the frame, then hit the starter. Seems to work though I haven't tried it yet.

Same with mini's. I finished off the bolt by doing exactly that.
