UPDATE: Driving from Washington State to SoCal to Flag to Gallup to Denver/Boulder/ Pendleton, OR, back to Washington.

Considered taking the RAV4 (>30mpg). Changed our minds to the 4Runner (<20mpg) because: Better in high passes with possible snow; more room (Need to take my walker); more comfortable on my back. Will be about 4K miles.

My commute is 174 miles each way. I chose another Land Cruiser, because that drive is the most dangerous thing I do in life, and a rolling survival shelter is better protection than a vehicle much more focused on efficient transportation. In 30+ years of long-distance driving I've totalled a few cars hitting deer, totalled a Land Cruiser, had a lot of close calls. I'm thankful I have the income to spend an extra few thousand $ per year on a LC over a Rav4 for my driving.

Headed on a week-long drive out east next month, across Michigan past Niagra Falls and into Maine. Wife's Audi Allroad is very capable and comfy, but we will be in the Land Cruiser. If I wanted to keep miles and wear off the Land Cruiser I'd rent a truck, nothing small and efficient.
