hey guys..

just getting my 40 ready for road worthy inspection on thursday. recently figured out an electrical issue that had my acc's on all the time and the hazards/horn on ACC..

now I went to start it up and go for a test drive tonight after putting the dash and fuse panel bak together, I had it started earlier in the week without any issues so I'm figuring my putting the dash back together caused some issues.

I have dual tanks and have re-crimped the cables that go to the aux/main switch. these connectors were very loose and came off easily hence why i recrimped with new, tight fitting connectors.

the problem i have now is that I can hear the glow relays click as they did before, but when I go to start it the engine just cranks and doesnt catch.

In this scenario is it possible to introduce air into the fuel system if the fuel pump isn't activated and pumping fuel? I had a visual inspection of the filters just before the pump and they both appear to contain diesel. When I flick the dash switch to main i can see the fuel gauge rise to about half which is where it should be so I figure I am using the right tank (ie, haven't mixed up aux/main fuel switch wires).

If I haven't introduced any air into the system by cranking, is it safe to suggest that all I need to do is find the electrical issue for the fuel pump and it will work again? I have to sort this issue by tomorrow night as the roadworthy is the next morning.

any and all help is greatly appreciated at this stage..

thanks,

andrew

Andrew there is no way air should have entered the system unless there is something loose or its run out of fuel.

To confirm you have fuel at the injector, undo an injector line and crank it for a few seconds and you should see fuel dribble out.

Thanks rosco..

Is the injector line the top most nut going into the injectors (before the "nozzle leakage pipe")?

Yes ,what they call the injecor pipe.If you dont have the proper spanner ,use 2 open enders of the same size if they are tight.

Does your engine have an edic system for fuel cut off?

If so, check that the edic motor is getting power by watching it move from shut off to overinjection when cranking the starter.

Edic is the motor and control rod on the back of the injection pump. It controls the fuel on and off, as well over inject for startup.

If you had the fuses apart maybe you have a bad connection to the edic relay for power or a blown fuse.

I had the same symptoms when I replaced my glowies a few months ago.. I think BB is onto it. Quickest check on the EDIC is to pull the arm off the injector pump--it will return to the "run" position as the default and if it starts then there's your problem. Or, rather, it could be anything in the EDIC electrical system.

I personally think these EDIC systems are a little funky by nature--I got the funky chicken again with the rains this winter and per Greg B's suggestion finally ran a ground wire from my block to the firewall and all is golden now.

i went out to the shed to check on it the other night and watch the edic arm and it fired up first go so I'm not sure what the problem was..

I have attempted to start it several times since then with no lingering issues so at this point the issue is still a mystery.. it would of been good to have figure out what it was that was causing the problem but maybe next time..

thanks for everyones suggestions too!.. i didnt end up getting it to the road worthy inspection as teh mod plate guys fell through so that put a dampener on that.. ill probably get it done next week some time.

well.. just when I though it had the problem sorted it came back..

I went to move the 40 out of the shed and again it would crank but not start..
got the mrs to turn it over and the edic arm was moving.. but no start.. gave the primer pump about 20-30 pushes (it didnt go hard) and tried again and it started.

i noticed previously there was a bit of a diesel leak on injector #3 so could it be possible that this is letting some air in??

didnt fiddle with any other wiring to get it working..
