I think you all need to step back and take a breath. This isn't the end of your trucks. I have a similar but much worse crack in one of my body panels and it's no where near a stress point. It's just a condition of how the panel was made.

In you enthusiasm to correct this terrible fault be sure not to make it worse.

Data point- 1994, 141K, 1/2 inch visible crack on DS, clean PS.

I might just touch up the DS to keep "the cancer" from taking hold...

156k miles on my '93. Crack on driver's side. Much ado about nothing IMO.

I don't check back for 36 hrs and the whole world comes crashing down! I ran out and checked mine and the DS has a very small <1/4" crack with a wee bit of rust. PS has nada. Interesting that Dan posted this first and now everyone has this. More CDan voodoo? I do believe that I will not be replacing my roof rack but other than that I will just keep an eye on it for a while. Toyota will be coming up with a solution soon that will be available from Dan...his dogs do need to eat after all! :D

More and more data here confirming RT and ID's theories - look at how many more have them on the DS than the PS; no matter how frequently you carry passengers, its realistically rare to open and close the PS doors more than the DS doors this would point to the theory that the crack is correlated with the amount of flex that area sees. Unlikely that everyone overloaded the DS of their roofs or that everyone gets off camber in such a way so as to stress the DS more than the PS.

To sum up it seems the problem is metal that is stretched past its comfort zone right from the start, gets more and more flex from all sorts of sources, reveals the crack in the metal via the cracks in the paint, is probably not a severe enough problem to sweat too much, but definitely is something to watch for both spreading and worsening as well as touching up enough to prevent rust through. Anyone interpret this differently?

This is cool, I'm halfway tempted to tape off an area around my hidden crack and grind off the paint just to see whether the crack is in fact there or not, we'll see!

Good god. Opening and closing the doors is not causing the body to crack!

See what you started Dan, it was not until you posted this crack thing that everbody started looking. Man you carry some MOJO buddy. Please do not post anything about Axles blowing up or head gasket failure. Who knows more trucks may have similar stuff going on. But you gotta feed the dogs. later robbie

Hmmmmm,

Time to start thinking about "the oil plug" again then.............;)

Dan.... please go outside, lift your hood, take a picture, then come back in here and type this in a new thread:

"Look! I just went outside and noticed a supercharger under the hood of my truck!"

Thanks,

Jim :D

Dan, please no! Anything but that, i just can't afford it right now. ;)

Well the oil plug was only 49 cents..........Close to free, no?

I got in on this thread way too late. I want to check my cruiser, but I do not know what a "C" pillar is. Hard to tell from the photos too. Am I opening the front or rear doors and checking for cracks along the back post? I think we are talking about the rear doors and specifically the pillar that seperates the rear door from the rear side windows (the sliding one that is suually tinted).

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but I just want to make sure I am looking at the same thing as everybody else. Thanks!

Yes, 3rd pillar from the front. Windshield is A pillar, etc.

'97, 76K, no crack visible. Very sharp crease in metal, though.

Told ya, yall shoulda gotten a '97! Sorry your rigs are fallin' apart so fast, dudes! Long live the 97s!!! :D

what I still don't get, though, is what is this thing that looks like a window so close to the door on Dan's first photo...

97 LX450, 37,275 miles, no visible crack on both DS and PS "C" pillars. No crack in paint and looks solid.
