Hey all,
I have a couple of wiring questions. I am in the process of adding a new stereo system as well as a new wiring harness form wired wagon and am trying to get a lay of the land first. I have a 1985 fj60 and the PO did some kind of weird wiring for the stereo. I am trying to sort it out.

Pic 1: This is a pic of what was wired to his head unit harness. The speakers were wired separately. The red wire is spliced from a factory wire. The yellow wire comes from the lighter (pic 2). The black wire is grounded to the dash, and the blue one is labeled automatic antennae and goes nowhere.

Question for pic one is...Why splice into the lighter with a yellow wire? It is only hot when the key is on ACC. I do not get it?

Pic 2: this is behind the lighter.

Pic 3: Anyone know what this is for? It is right next the switch for rear heater, rear defrost, and window washer...

So, I am just trying to figure out what to use here for my new stereo. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey bro! You up for burgers and brew at 10:30 tonight?

I'll try to help, and maybe you can head over mon to wrench at my place (cuz I have a nunchaku to do in the driveway/garage anyhow!)

Pic 1: people splice into ACC so that the radio will power off with the key.

Pic 3: I have that too, I believe it is an extra part of harness because in other markets there is a fog light button next to the buttons we have. :(

OK, I feel like an idiot for continuing to edit this post! But what was (and still is confusing me) is that the red wire that comes from the factory harness is ALSO only ACC. So why tap into the lighter (and splice the yellow wire) when the red wire already is switched power? Do you need two for some radios?

Yes, 2 needed for radios that have memories and/or clocks. PO prob just wanted them on diff fuses (good idea, just maybe poorly executed by PO)

OK, but do you need two ACC/Switched power sources? Which is how it is set up. I would understand one battery and one switched, but what is the need for two switched power sources?

It sounds like the po just wired it wrong one should be constant power and one switch acc power. Mine was wired the same when I got it easy fix

Good point. 74Shovel beat me to it, prob just another wonderful gift from the PO to you (kinda like the washers on my front wheels studs, behind my front wheels!!)

One wire is suppose to be hot all the time for clock and memory, the other is hot on acc and power. As it has been said PO left you a present.

Ok, so I have to pick one ACC-switched wire. Does it matter if I pick the stock wire from the radio harness, or the yellow wire the PO spliced from the cig lighter? And if i pick the stock wire, should I back out the other?

Since there is no Battery/hot wire, I am going to use the extra wire from my wired wagon light harness. So that is not a problem.

Thanks.

IMO I would use the wire already there from the PO. This way your not splicing in more wires. If you chose to use your own from the radio harness, I would remove the other wire. No need to start a spaghetti factory in there.

T-Bones--nice rig! Let me know if you are ever passing through davis...

As far as more splicing, it is already done. PO had BOTH wires going into his four wire plug (see pic). I am just wondering if it is better to use the red wire from the factory wiring and undo his splice from the lighter. But maybe it just does not matter! Because either way I am not going to use that plug.

Well if there are two wires then I would use the one Toyota intended to operate the radio and remove the other one, but thats just me. In reality it probably makes no diffrence. Thanks for the kind words. And if you are ever in the Citrus Heights area of Sac, look me up.
