My self. how long should it take, how much for the parts

if I do it myself, what should I budget for parts $$$ ?
What should I budge for time?

***See post 14 for correction***

I'm not sure if my rebuild included the trunnion bearings or not. I know I replaced seals and did the birfields. Parts to do it myself were under $600 from CDan. I added the 100 Series brakes upgrade, and replaced my calipers because of sticking pistons. I was under $800 for parts total. I found a local Firestone to do the labor for under $500 using my parts when I ran out of time to do it myself. It took them much longer than quoted and they could have charged me near $800 for labor, but stuck to their original quote.

Local dealership was asking $800 to just do the seals if I remember correctly.

Aftermarket rebuild kit from Cruiser Outfitters is around $100, add in a few tubes of grease, diff fluid, paper towels, etc. Dan also has a kit, not sure what he charges, but it would be all OEM parts.

If you've never torn into an axle, figure 6 hours first side, 4 hours other side. Tearing down is easy, it's the cleaning up all that grease and putting back together carefully that takes time.

I would make sure you use Toyota axle seals. I know folks who have used aftermarket axle seals and had to do it again and often.

Also a good time to replace the rotors and Pads and would cost around an extra $200.

I just bought parts from Dan to do my front axle. Including wheel bearings and 100 series brake pads and it came out to approx $550 rounding up a few dollars.

What???? Then things have changed quite a bit since I did mine a couple years ago. I did the whole job (including cleaning supplies and two wash tubs) for under $250.00. I replaced all trunion (sourced from C-dan) and wheel bearings (Timkens) and races.

100 series pads are only 40 bucks or so. How'd you get to $550?

Matt,

I agree with Rookie2. I'm thinking you added something like rotors or calipers, too? The seal kit with trunions is around $120 IIRC.

I just ordered the kit from Dan w/ trunion bearings and 80 series pads for $260.00.

Ah well, things have either gone up in reality, or in my feeble head!!! Heh. At any rate, doing it yourself will save you a bit less than $1000.

You guys are right. I was going off memory. Here you go:

I got seals, gaskets, snap rings, washers, more seals, trunnion bearings, more gaskets for $336.00. This is the axle rebuild kit. I added the 100 series Front discs and pads, which added another $210. I also threw in the calipers but I couldn't locate that invoice, but that brought it up closer to $700. Sorry for the confusion. These prices will obviously vary with time and availability. These were good on my invoice through the end of march.

Basic package ~218 bucks
Wheel bearings, a set ~117 bucks
Rotors, a pair ~145 bucks
Pads, 100 series, ~56 bucks

Plus the Brown Man for the heavy stuff.

Yes, things were added to that price  . Those things being tie-rod ends and drag links.

With no previous experience with axle rebuild....

I did my front axle on 84 4runner in about 12hrs total, (two sittings).
Seal kit was about $ 110.

About the 100 series pads. Do I need to get the 100 series disk and 100 pads?
Or the 80 disks and 100 pads

You can use the 80 series discs. I jsut put in the 100 series pads and like others was not able to use the shims. There's a lot more material on the 100 pads. So, after a few months and some wear, I'll put them in.
