Coolant or water

I doubt it's all that critical to have coolant immediatly available unless you have a very skinny radiator. 76 tco bj40 mentioned that he has been running on water so his need for coolant is definitely not critical. As such, it's a matter of whichever you most believe in and the attendant cost.

Me, I would choose the brand most readily available.

True enough, but some types CANNOT be mixed without problems so whatever he goes with he needs to stay with until flushing the system.

Golden rule is to never mix coolant colors. If its green, only add green. Whatever you do never mix the regular green with the long life orange coolant. It will create a bad reaction with the metal in your cooling system. There is also the new pet friendly (yuky tasting) coolant out and being promoted by the SPCA. I might give that a try after a bit of research to see about its thermal properties and protection of cooling system metals. John

Just flushed out my system last night. The repair manual says to use "Any high quality ethylene Glycol brand of coolant." I was going to go with the pet friendly brand, but that was Propylene glycol.

Coolant/Antifreeze lowers the freezing point (Not applicable in your situation) AND raises the boiling point of the water (Good for you) of the water it is mixed with.

The Antifreeze also stops electrolysis from eating various metal components in the engine, moreso if it is equipped with wet liners
