I have no idea and no hope of understanding what you guys are talking about. Lucky for me I live in the tropics. When my thermostat sprung a leak, I simply bypassed it.

Kalawang

I live in the Philippines as Kalawang. I've heard from local mechanics that in the tropics, there is really no need for this thermostat. And instead becomes a possible overheating culprit. Hence, they suggest that the thermostat be removed. Any thoughts?

Note: maybe this thermostat issue is related to this issue I had: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=147077. To experienced LC mechanics - probably related?

Question: can somebody post a pic of where the thermostat is located? on na HDJ81, is it located inside the upper radiator hose? Or on the lower hose. How does one remove the thermostat?

Kalawang - you've had yours removed for close to 4 years now. Any side effects? What is meant by bypass: removal of the thermostat?

Am not yet planning on removing it until I hear your opinions.

The removal of the T/S seemed to be beneficial on engines designed in the 50s but the new types need it to build pressure inside the water jacket which inhibits hot water bubbles around the bores.
The T/S helps the engine reach is its ideal operating temp quicker which is important as most of the wear happens when cold.

If you get underneath you will see the lower radiator hose. It is connected to a alloy tube that bolts to the block. At this junction of engine and alloy tube, the T/S lives and works:D
Its the same for 1HZ,1HD T and 1KZ T;)
