Problem I have is that after a long trip my Lj78 fills up the reservoir. It doesn't seem to get sucked back into the rad, and as a result it is low on coolant after the trip. I recently installed a new rad, when I saw the problem called the rad shop and explained it to him, he stated that I should have installed a new thermostat also.
Could it be something to do with the rad cap, is the spring in it to weak after 17 years? There is a marking on the rad cap 0.9 I'm guessing that's the pressure measured in Bar. Could I get a cap that doesn't release until a higher pressure or is it going to increase the chance of cracking my head in the little 2L-TE

Does it bubble in the overflow tank? It might indicate a cracked head.

This always the 1st thing to look at. Put a new one and know its good.
The 17 year old one has probably lost its strength.
The cap is designed to be a weak point so you should go with one the same PSI.

The correct pressure is vital as it helps stop the coolant from bubbling around the bores.

thanks Rosco, I'm heading out the door right now to get one, anyone know exactly where the thermostat is located?

As for the Cracked head not yet boys, no bubbles what soever or whitesmoke, the one in the million.

The thermostat is inside the housing that the rad cap is on.

BTW my truck didn't blow white smoke when the head cracked, but the coolant was bubbling over. I would check your oil (for coolant in oil) just in case though.

Mine never cracked either, I ran mine to 4700rpm just about every shift bagged on it to keep up with the guys in the club. Had to power shift to keep up with the 12H-Ts and 13B-Ts

check under your rad cap

You're best off keeping with the rated pressure cap. Going higher might cause coolant to try escaping elsewhere. :) Don't know the specifics of your coolant system exactly, but if the system uses the sealed coolant system with the expansion tank, then the main things to check for coolant not being pulled back into the system are the rad cap, the hose on the inside of the expansion tank bottle to the lid and also the coolant hoses themselves to make sure that the system is not sucking air in via other areas, i.e: a perished hose or poorly sealed hose.

Put in a new Rad cap, works beautifully, no problems, haven't pushed it yet.

The hose in the bottle doesn't seal very well, it may be the culprit for not sucking properly

That would be the reason

put in the 82 degree celsius thermostat, I had my tandem axle car hauler trailer full of concrete, drywall and wood, went up a 9 percent grade on the highway hitting boost at 16 psi and the hottest the truck got was 195 degrees fahrenheit. I might have only been doing 40 kph at the top of the hill, but hey the 2lte is no power horse
