Is there a way to make the a/c(lighter pug) hot when the engine is off. If you do will it drain the battery if not in use.

bdyer,

top right hand of the page you will see search this forum pull down bar...type in "12v outlet" and alot of info will come up for your needs...once you have researched repost with very specific questions and the regulars will chime in....otherwise you will get the cold shoulder treatment....

why not simply install a 2nd constant-hot outlet?

The aux 12v outlet is the best solution for a number of reasons. I think it was Kit (bkgIII) that posted pictures of a nicely done multiple 12v outlet using the factory ash tray. There are a lot of different solutions. The only pointer that I would add is to *not* do the "rear ashtray" mod described by Christo on his web site. I did that one and it turned out horrible. If you are going to go that route then ask for suggestions on wire size and other things.

It should be noted that the factory cig lighter is not to be used for anything with a high amperage. They will burn the tiny fusible link that is in the housing and it's happened a number of times. The factory wiring to the cig lighter is very small.

I am thinking about doing something with Anderson PowerPoles instead of your run-of-the-mill round 12v plug/outlet. You might read up on those here on "mud and using Google before you start the project.

This is what I did to get constant hot to the cargo area:

Firetruck, are those banana plugs that youre connecting up through the CLA? Why not tap off one of your power points and put in a couple of female banana plugs right above your CLA? You could still have your CLA available for other stuff.

On my old taco, i took a 3 outlet radio shack CLA, and wired in two sets of bananas in between the CLA outlets. I flew RC planes, and used a couple of 12v chargers that ran off the bananas. Those stayed on in the truck all the time. All connections were soldered into the CLA buss. I then took some 10 guage, ran a link from the battery (fused at both ends) and to a tamiya R/C battery connector. I could connect the whole CLA assembly easily, and remove it if I was hauling something.

Yeah those are banana plugs, I only have them because that is what was there on the DC cord when I bought my used fridge, actually probably going to switch it to a regular 12v "cigarette lighter" plug, I don't really have anything else to run using banana plugs.

I use PowerPoles on all communications related equipment, both in the truck as well as in the house. Excellent product, and widely used in various commercial applications as well.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, the proliferation of cigarette lighter plugs on aftermarket 12vdc devices necessitates having a couple of them available. As an added accessory, I have a couple of loose "jumper" cables that have a cigarette lighter plug (and another with battery clips) on one end, and PowerPoles on the other. Very versatile.

Ron,
You were probably the one that first mentioned the PowerPoles and I checked them out at that time. I am planning to convert my truck to PowerPoles during the upcoming "Big Bang" project.

Check out Powerwerx. Good source for Anderson products, colored zip cord, etc. No affiliation.

I put a constant outlet in the back of the console for my daughters' toys. You could put it anywhere. The wiring is easy. Ground is anywhere there is metal. Power is from the battery or under the dash at a large direct power wire. Place a fuse on the power wire. The hardest part is removing console parts to hide the wires.
