I have a diesel 80 and a 1FZ 100 and I'm a fan of gasser characteristics. Minus the fuel economy. However, don't kid yourself into thinking that running a diesel 80 is cheaper because it just isn't. Additives on every fill up, frequent and expensive oil and fuel filter changes, expensive injector maintenance, if a turbo or fuel pump goes say goodbye to any of the differential savings. Not to mention if the motor itself goes. That's a $10k+ experience.

Only reason to get a diesel 80 is cool factor and range.

geanes: Thinking it might be marketing over politics. Americans = cush + good roads.

Even diesels in the market way back did not sell well (vw rabbit during '70s energy crisis, etc.).

They are just too noisy/smokey for the american tastes.

Think the 100 series # sold are low, just imagine how low the diesel option numbers would be (certainly no lexus buyers in that market). If there was market demand, the manufacturers would be all over it in mass, though vw did see an opening which they squandered.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a diesel 100, but mainly for the solid front axle......

Yea, Diesel cruiser is such a niche market in the USA. American love big displacement motor and gas is cheap here, not like Europe or Asia. I would love to buy a 100 series or 200 series cruiser if there is one available.

@Live to Ski .... and the torque :)

This is exactly my thoughts, when the big repair bill comes, all your fuel savings go down the pan. I have given out massive bills on mediocre cars, what they could be on a landcruiser would be frightening. Common rail, turbo's particle filters and Egr's have turned the reliable old diesel into a bit of a liability.
