Does the electronic ignition distributor have to have the matching igniter from the same year? I have read different opinions and want to know for sure before I spend my money buying something that won't work!

No, they don't have to match. The electronic distributor guts are the same from 1978 to 1987. Any 1978-1987 ignitor/coil will work with any 1978-1987 distributor.

My information is the same as what Jim said ... but I'm in the middle
of trying to mate an igniter from an 85 FJ60 to my '79 electronic
ignition (FJ40) and the clips don't match. But after I get hold of
a schematic for the 85 igniter and hook it up right I'm confident that
there will be fire in the hole.
