hey folks, does anyone here commute in their 200 and find the adaptive cruise worthwhile? I had a 200 until about a year ago but sold it to buy a truck. Now that things have changed a bit I’m itching to get another 200 for my daily commute but don’t want to regret it if the adaptive cruise doesn’t make it tolerable.
I read a study where the less things you have to deal or keep up with while driving correlates to less fatigue while driving. So the less things you have to keep up with should theoretically allow you to drive longer periods. I believe this to be true for the adaptive cruise. Keeping distance from any vehicle or object in front of me while maintaining optimal speed isn't something I need to keep up with. Several less things to worry about.
I commute ~15 miles one way, and switch between my wake-me up sports car and my coddle-me LX570. LX570 makes a fine commuter car. I don't have radar cruise on my '09, but sure wish I have it when towing!
I don’t use it much but maybe I should. I find the acceleration to be more harsh than I typically rev it. Does the radar work in stop and go? Does it stop the LC in an emergency situation?
I like it for open driving. Any kind of traffic and its too harsh.
Other annoying thing is that occasionally if you're in a sweeping turn, and there's a car ahead of you but in the next lane, the radar will see that and brake while you're in the turn.
Yes, I drive at least 10 hours every weekend with my LC or my van. I love the adapt cruise control on the LC, it give me less chance to get speeding ticket. With my van sometime I slow down by hitting the break and I step on the gas to speed up and sometime I forget I was speeding. With the LC it slow by itself and it speep up to the speed limited.
I sometimes use the adaptive in my '16, but usually opt for the normal cruise control. My wife loves the equivalent in her Mercedes, but I find it hard to get used to. I prefer the old fashioned cruise control.
25 mile one way commute in '17 LX 570. Open freeway, it's great. When I get to the traffic light as I approach home I always leave it on to make sure my LX brakes all the way to a standstill - haven't rear ended anyone yet! In traffic, I can anticipate better and ease off the throttle to reduce speed. The adaptive control seems to brake and accelerate inefficiently in this situation so I turn it off. I think it's borderline dangerous if somebody cuts in front of you, as the vehicle senses impending doom and brakes very sharply!

I’m an adaptive cruise control snob, I will admit. I currently have 4 vehicles with it, and they are all different. The LC’s is by far the worst.
I love ACC, but unless Toyota improved it on the 200 since 2015, it’s one of the clunkier systems out there.
It sees turns as oncoming vehicles and is dangerously slow to respond when vehicles dart in front of you or brake suddenly. It’s better than nothing but requires far more vigilence than it probably should.
Don’t even get me started on the error messages if there is even a particle of dust on the sensor or rain or snow... (all of which my Ridgeline handles with aplomb.)
I wholeheartedly agree with @Canyonero with regards to the system being clunky. It really is!
Even so, it is pretty much the only cruise control option I use. I find it extremely useful while doing out 20 mile town run on the highway. For me it was really a reduction in frustration from having to constantly adjust the cruise setting. Now, I just set it and change lanes whenever I'm ready to pass someone.
I don’t buy LC’s for ACC but since they ask 80k, they should offer a much better system. It truly sucks compared to others in its price class. Like everyone else has mentioned the braking taking over when going around a turn and it catches the car in another lane and then breaks hard. Well I live where it’s not miles of straight road, so it becomes useless for me. In the Mercedes it allows me to use it in stop and go traffic, etc without ever having to use the breaks or gas. However I can’t take it through rivers and climb mountains lol
They may have improved it for 2016, I haven't encountered the issues like it detecting an alternate lane vehicle during a turn or throwing errors. I do wish it had full stop+go support, though.
What others have said--> Toyota/Lexus adaptive cruise control sucks.
They have not updated it since it came out and they really need to.
Once you try it from another maker you'll notice how terrible it is.
Lacks stop/go function which makes it unusable for many commutes.
Easily kicks off in the rain.
Resume/acceleration avoids shifting so it's slow.
Distance reaction is too conservative. Brakes are applied immediately if a car is detected up-ahead no matter how much distance is open.
Other manufacturers have refined this better. They now use the radar sensor and a camera to do the work. Others will behave differently based on speed and distance. Toyota is just using the radar. Toyota is still on the gen 1 way of doing things.
The bummer is you have to go out of your way not to use the radar cruise on Toyota as it is the default. On other manufacturers you have to choose the radar cruise specifically- The standard cruise is still an option and easily accessible.
