My LX came with the 1.4 kw starter in it. It was raised in Arizona, but now resides in the great white North. The contacts need to be replaced ( been acting up for about a month). I talked to Beno today, he says ditch the 1.4 and get the 2.0.
I know he is right, but I wanted to see what the gang in the Northern parts had to say. Is it worth the upgrade or just do the plunger and contacts I'm the 1.4??

Ask the seller what the numbers are on the stickers; wonder if it's a rebuilt original Toyota Denso (two stickers on the side), Beno would know.

What is the part number for the 2.0kw starter? I have a Canadian sold LX450, wondering if I have the 2.0kw.

Not the parts guru, but the 2.0kW starter on my 80 is 28100-66060.

i live in SK im just using 1.4kw starter with no problems last winter. i wish to have a 2.2kw like what Beno said.

I've driven my 80 up north in very low temps and didn't have any problems with it turning over with the 2.0kW starter (and Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30) and a good battery.

If I had to guess, I would say that a Lexus built for Canada would have the 2.0

The 2.2 is a pipe dream. I think the 2.0 is the way to go. It's just that I can think of things I could spend $200 on right now, that's the only reason i am thinking about just doing the contacts and plunger on the 1.4 decisions .. decisions.

I have had the Lexus through two winters and the 1.4 has been fine .. the right oil, a good battery and a oil pan heater probably makes a difference as well.

That used 2.0kW starter is a good deal if it's a Toyota-Denso part.

Agreed

Then save the $200 and just rebuild the 1.4.

I have a 2.2 on my 96 that was on there when I bought it and it still takes 4-5 cranks to start the engine regardless of the time of year. I've never heard any complaints about cold weather starting from any of the club members in my area (except the diesel guys, but they're a special breed!) so I wouldn't worry about the 1.4 vs 2.0 vs 2.2

Thanks Adam .. that's the info I was looking for. I know you have bad winter temps out that way as well, probably worse than us.

cheers!

I've definitely wished for a chinook a few times this winter! We had a freezing rain warning last night too. I'm so ready for summer it's not even funny.

Good luck with the contact replacement. Don't forget to clamp the contacts down to the starter while you tighten them. I used a block of wood and a C-clamp and it's been fine for over 2 years.

in the last two weeks we have had two 12 cm drops of snow over night! Still cold every morning. No chinooks recently bud!

I think I have the gist of what to do with the contacts .. never been inside a starter, but I will poke around on here for some more info before I tie into it. Thanks again!
