My 71 has the original coil and ballest resistor. Can I replace the coil with a newer one and not use the resistor?

If you do you will burn up your points. The ballast resistor cuts down the voltage to something less than 12V. I thought it was 6V, but there is some difference of opinion about what exactly is the voltage. Ballast resistors are cheap and they make some that are adjustable.

I think you can if you switch to the Petronix Elec ignition kit. Some one double check me on that.
