I am in the works to purchase my 5th cruiser over the years and have located a '99 in my area that will work. I have tossed between the 80 and 100 over the past month but I like the V8 power in the 100. So I beleive I should have the 100 in my driveway by tomorrow.

So stating that I have a question for everone. Has anyone tried installing coil-overs and discard the torsion bars? I just read an article in the one of the four wheel mags that did this on the Tahoe.

Also on my past 100 I installed 315/75 Goodyear MTR's and want to go with something a bit larger like 36-37's. I like the Parnelli Jones tires. On Alan Podvin's old modified 100, were those 36's or 38's? Additionally he mentioned he used wheel spacers, what size and did they create vibrations since the stock rim is hub-centric?

I know too many questions but am very serious about modifing my new cruiser. I need a wide tire for a big foot print since I'm traveling across the sand quite a bit.

TIA.

Jimmy,

There is a prototype coil over setup in Japan but no more information available other than a picture.

I am running Nitto TerraGrapler AT's on my LX470 and really happy with them. Quiet and aggresive enough for what I am doing with the truck. 325/65/18. They are wide. Also running 1" spacers, mostly to get the front wheels out after lifting it. They are not needed on the rear. The stance is now wider in the rear that the front. No vibrations that I can speak off.

picture attached to give you an idea

Thanks for the info Christo. Are you running your torsion bars and OME rear springs? Also what does 325/65/18 equate to?

When did you ditch the 100 and purchase a 470?

Gotchya!

I did have an 470 for a while and now after reading the posts about your 470, I may have to weigh my options between a 100 or a 470. I'll sleep over it tonight though....:)

Thanks Christo.

Jimmy

Have been waiting for someone here to get sick of the T bar front end, especially now they are breaking the A arm mounts off over here.

Lexus and Cruiser A arms are the same part No's for both, meaning the hyd suspension is fitted to the A arm ok, and the shock mounts are the same for both also, meaning the shock tower should hold a coil over ok, though I would strengthen the tower, and perhaps extend it, and make a new top A arm, to fix ball joint angle for extended travel without binding.

I have discussed this with afew people previously on the 100 list at www.lcool.org though a fix for broken A arms might be the early option first..... [this pic is 5th one in a couple of months I have heard of]

This picture scares the s#$@ out of me.

Darren, these 5 cases you know about are they using after market (higher then stock spring rate) bars or stock bars. Also are these HDJ’s that are failing or UZJ’s? Is Toyota doing anything about it? Do you have more info about it? In my mind, this could kill the UZJ as a vehicle dependent expedition rig.

On the spring over mod, to me it all revolves around the steering knuckle. Need anew one that relocate the tie rod end mounting point and the distance between the upper and lower A frames. Like you say, new upper A frame is also in order. Heck, while you at it make’em both longer. This way you can gain some meaningful amount of wheel travel. The rest is easy
Again, the large investments are the knuckles. If I had a pair, I would be well on my way to a new IFS front end.

What do you think?
Doron.

UZJ100 – still waiting for re-gearing. Maybe T-case re-gearing (1.12 high/3.05 low)

The car in that picture had factory torsion bars, and all I have heard of so far have been diesel ones.

Some have had uprated OME or rockcrawler T bars also that I know of which have broken.

read someplace(Aussie 4x4 mag I think) that the front A arms are the same as some Hino trucks......true I dunno.

Havent seen an IFS hino, only beam axle here? or 4x4.
