I am traveling with the family (FSM at home). CEL comes on, but everything is running smoothly. Pull the code at local autoparts. It is 510 - Throttle Position Switch Malfuction.

I searched here, found a couple of threads about folks pulling the TPS Sensor before cleaning the throttle body. Someone else mentioned a crake or leak in the intake can cause that code. No cracks or leaks and I have not had the TB off.

Is 510 a problem with the actual sensor?

Where is the sensor?

Can it be tested or it is toast if that is the code?

bump - anyone on have a 96 FSM handy?

it is not uncommon for the tps to go out after there are many many mile on a vehicle. i think it is like $120 at a dealer. the best way for you to put it on would be ussing a multimeter set for ohms. measure between terminals 1 and 2. turn the sesor to one side and you should get 0ohms. at the other side you should get like ~30 ohms. set it to 0 ohms rihg t at the edge of where it deflects from whatever # it may show and 0ohms. i hope i didnt confuse you with this. and hope it helps.

1. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY
(a) Check that the throttle linkage moves smoothly.
(b) Check the vacuum at each port.
 Start the engine.
Check the vacuum with your finger.
Port name At idle At 3,500 rpm
P No vacuum Vacuum
E No vacuum Vacuum
R No vacuum Vacuum

2. INSPECT THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR
(a) Disconnect the TP sensor connector.
(b) Apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
(c) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between
each terminal.
Throttle valve Between Resistance
condition terminals
Fully closed VTA – E2 0.2 – 5.7 kW
Fully closed IDL – E2 2.3 kW or less
Open IDL – E2 Infinity
Fully open VTA – E2 2.0 – 10.2 kW
– VC – E2 2.5 – 5.9 kW

(d) Reconnect the TP sensor connector.

3. INSPECT AND ADJUST DASHPOT
(a) Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
(b) Check the idle speed.
Idle speed: 650 ± 50 rpm (N position)
(c) Open the throttle valve until the throttle lever separates
from the dashpot end.
(d) Release the throttle valve gradually, and check the dashpot
setting speed when the throttle lever touched the
dashpot end.
Dashpot setting speed: 2,200 ± 300 rpm
If not as specified, adjust using the following procedure:
(1) Stop the engine.
(2) Loosen the lock nut of the stopper bolt.
(3) Adjust the dashpot setting speed by turning the
stopper bolt.
(4) Start the engine and check the dashpot setting
speed.
(5) Retighten the lock nut.
(e) Maintain the engine at 3,500 rpm.
(f) Release the throttle valve, and check that the engine returns
to idle in a few seconds.

4. CHECK THROTTLE OPENER
(a) Disconnect the vacuum hose from the throttle opener,
and plug the hose end.
(b) Check the throttle opener setting speed.
Throttle opener setting speed: 700 – 1,000 rpm
If the throttle opener setting is not as specified, replace the
throttle body.
(c) Stop the engine.
(d) Reconnect the vacuum hose to the throttle opener.
(e) Start the engine, and check that the idle speed returns to
the correct speed.
Idle speed: 650 ± 50 rpm (N position)

 Closed throttle position switch
ECM
HINT:
After confirming DTC P0510 use the TOYOTA hand–held tester to confirm the closed throttle position switch
signal from ”CURRENT DATA”.
Throttle Valve Closed Throttle Position Switch Signal Malfunction
Fully closed OFF Open circuit
Fully open ON Short circuit

WIRING DIAGRAM
Refer to DTC P0120 (Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch ”A” Circuit Malfunction) on page DI–35 for WIRING

Let me know if you need more info from the '96 FSM.

Charlie

Charlie, thank you so much.

Holy crap, that is alot of steps. If I knew is was definately the sensor, I'd just buy a new one as opposed to doing all that!

I'll get under there and see what I can determine.

Thank you again.

Has or Can someone check what voltage they are getting at the TPS sensor when performing the "Measure voltage between terminals 1 and 2 of the throttle position sensor connector."

CAN someone post up what they get??? Please

I could really use the help. I have thrown 2 code 510's in the last couple of weeks which is the Closed Throttle Position Sensor position. I have had an erratic shifting problem when I hit the brake pedal, which I still haven't figured out, but the FSM says that when testing Pin's 1 and 2 together that I should see 9 - 14 volts. I get 7.2 Volts there and I get the same back at the ECU. I am just trying to see what others get if they actually test the pins. Isn't too hard to test and any help would be appreciated.

Just wanted to update everyone. My transmission problem is fixed as well as my TPS is solved. It was a bad wire from the ECU to the TPS. It was the IDL wire (Green / White) and must have been toasted somewhere between. The only other thing I have to work on is getting my Cruise Control ECU hooked back in which is a Splice from the Green / White to the IDL of the TPS. Not even sure how much I care being here in the beautiful rockies. CC doesn't do much anyways :)... Well I probably should see Christo and Team to get them to clean up my wiring. Have you seen one of them solder. Work of art. Mine... Blobs of metal, but functioning at least.
