I have no welding experience and was thinking about taking the "Basics of Welding" at CNM. However, at $800 I think I would rather higher a HDC member to teach me what I need to learn and equipment to purchase.

The way I see it is (over the next year):

  1. Help me purchase equipment. Looking at either the Millermatic 211 or Lincoln Power Mig 180 Dual.
  2. Teach me the fundamentals of welding so I can practice on s-c-r-a-p.
  3. Then help me with cutting out rust and welding in new panels. Not all of it, just teach me enough so I can get started.
  4. Then help me weld in a Metal Tech rollbar and sliders - to make sure I am creating strong welds. Obviously, I will only do this after I have practiced a lot.
Comments, thoughts, volunteers for hire, ...?

Pappy's Metal Tech cage was bolted in. He modified it with a few add-ons but nothing that would have to be done to have a safe cage.

Hire (not higher) :-)

$800 is outrageous for a welding class but I guess it's meant for a cert at the end of the class. Shame, the price isn't more reasonable.

BTW, you mean "hire", not higher (or lower) ..... :-)

Andrew,

if you don't mind, I would be wiling to pay for someone teaching me how to weld too. I have a Lincoln 220 I got for for cheap, helmet, and gloves, but cant weld for $hit.

Was the $800 for the entire program, or just a basic class? Seems when I looked into it the cost was not an issue. Getting into the class was. I never could.

Up here in Farm you can take the welding classes as an audit. Might be cheaper.

My buddy actually takes the "Metal Art" class as an audit, pays the $25 materials fee and has built sliders and both front and rear bumpers for his Taco. Moral of the story, look for the ART class instead of the certified welding class.

I would be willing to help.... just don't know how much time I'll have. I know CNM's tuition went up but $ 800...thats crazy! You can get into a nice welder for that. The nice thing about CNM is you get to use their welders, electricity, gas, and metal to practice, practice practice! Higher duty cycle machines are nice also! The instructors have seen a lot of welds, good and bad.

What was the course number for the $800 class? Look into the weld 1060 (oxyacetylene gas welding and shielded metal arc welding) then the weld 1065 (gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding).

I run the miller 211 its nice! Lincoln are nice also, though I don't have much experience with them.

I would be willing to give a few lessons using your equipment and supplies for who ever wants to sit in. I am no expert - Its just a hobby! I still learn stuff all the time.

As for building sliders and cages... Start small, build a welding cart , then a welding table, then sliders, then roll cage. If you weld enough and break enough of your stuff, you'll know your welds.

Let me know.

Jarred,

For me, any time to figure out some finer points of welding would be helpful. Can't speak for Andrew, but during the winter months, I can make time when needed. My Licoln is a stick welder. I had a Craftsman MIG, but that thing turned out to be a POS so I sold it. I practiced on bed frames when I had it. Those are a dime a dozen around apartment complexes. I can see about getting other scrap metal too.

Wonder if there is a good place to get drop material to use for "coupons"?

I could sure use practice on different thicknesses and angles, pipe, etc.

Anyone know of a good supply?

I've thought about just showing up to reliance and choice and just asking what they got laying in the chop pile... Figure they might just sell at bulk price? But yeah, tube, plates, etc would be great to have laying around for practice and the misc tab, bracket, etc.

The metal recycler places might be even better.

I have certainly found tube is my weakness for technique...

Coupon testing is an integral part of learning to weld. Burn it and then see if you can take it apart. We need to find a good place to dumpster dive!

Try Metal SuperMarkets... they have a bunch of scrap and drops that would be good. Ask for Mary and tell her what your wanting...might get a good price.

edit: WTF... why is the word s.c.r.a.p blanked out????

Not at my end. I see scrap just fine. Must be the dirty word editor.

Even when you type it it's blanked out...is it my end? How do I change it?

I think there is a big hunk of scrap over at Beno's.:flipoff2:

Do really want to know what Ali censor's on his computer?

I started with bed frames. People throw those out all the time. I picked up a few just driving around at work. I heard there is a pile scrap metal (not bed frames) near me that the lady forclosed on. I just need to get ahold of her.

well there is a specific word sensor you can add to in user cp>options or something. but i don't see the global profanity filter, might be in profile? i see the words ok, so there must be something different. are you on a mac? they like to keep all kinds of stuff from you.... lmao
