Hi guys,

I was driving my 76 fj40 the other day when I noticed a clunk. I was concerned so I limped home.

I got the rear end up on jack stands and chalked the front tires. I started it and put it in 4th gear. I noticed a clunk for every rotation of the output shaft. What do you think is the cause of this clunk? Ive heard of them whining and growling, but not a clunk. The only time it does not do it is when the trany is in neutral. The case has oil in it, and the u joints look and feel good. Im going to drain the case and see if I lost preload on the output nut and the input shaft nut. Any suggestions????

Thanks,
Eric

It sounds like you have already figured out that you need to look inside the transfer case to identify your source. Do not overlook the tcase housing and mounting bolts first.
