I've been thinking lately that it might be a cool club function to have a winch safety course. Alot of us have winches and can use them in only the most basic sense, or maybe I speak for myself only. :D Anyhow, I think it would be a very good idea if we could all meet up one day and have a "how-to" day with our winches. I would definitely like to be more comfortable with winching. Even folks w/o winches should have exposure to them b/c they may be involved with the winch on someone elses vehicle to get their own out one day!

Does this sound like something do-able? Any members that would like to teach it? (I don't know enough, that's why I want the help!!!) It seems like a good idea to learn and practice in a non-critical environment.

Just throwin' it out there!

I assumed my nomination was soon to follow and I can coordinate, just not instruct. So i'll put some ideas together on how to get this off the ground.

Others post your thoughts too!!!!

Great post Tad, I think it's a valuable idea.

I was on some web site recently where I was checking out a "Winching - How To" video. I remember thinking it looked pretty informative. Can't remember where I saw it though...

very good idea. I've actually never used one so it would definately be good for me and the wife. Thanks.

Great topic for a club meeting, Tad. There are many basics that can be easily shared. Some of us have experience righting vehicles after a roll.

Also, try to include some non-vehicle recovery uses of your winch. I have lifted items for construction, downed trees, and last year after Hurricane Wilma, Sputnik 40, my wife and I used our winches to raise an uprooted tree for a neighbor:

I remember that thread Jim, that was pretty damn cool!!

Good info guys, and I remember that thread well Jim. Alot of folks posted up in that one! I'm going to try and get in touch with WARN and see what they can do for us. I'm pretty sure they have a video and their site has some pretty promising leads on event sponsorships (free video and stuff I hope) for wheeling clubs.

Anybody want to instruct / help instruct????

Alex, do you have that dude's name or anything? I was thinking about the FJC trail team guy Tim as a possible lead.

What about that guy from the trail team Tim? JP will know the one I'm talking about. Hes the most hardcore guy ever when it comes to using the winch right and I we might be able to get some fj's out with us as well. As for righting yourself after a rollover JP has that covered too. :flipoff2:

I'm game for driving up for this one. I definitely need to learn how you guys are going to get me unstuck!!!

Great idea.

Can we dig a big hole out there Tad...and get a cruiser stuck and winch it out!!

CHuck I had the perfect big hole when we built the pond behind our last house; but it's full of water now. :grinpimp:

Richard that's the guy I was thinking of too.

Very cool looking event Dan! I'm looking out into Feb hopefully for this so it won't interfere with too much. Folks will be getting jammed up with occasions in Dec and Jan is MLK in Tellico. I need to get with JP to coordinate with the calendar of events too but I'll make sure and include you in on that decision making process!!

I have Tim's info if you need it. He gave me his card when he and I discussed classes for FJC owners.
