Trying to chase down the famous "clonk" sound...

When it occurs:
-come to a stop at a stop light, then "clonk" when I take off.

-front driveshaft splines grease issue you say? No problem, removed front DS
-now that "clonk" is gone after starting from a stop. HOWEVER, there is a clonk while coming to a stop.

This clonk is happening at the same time the Transmission gear shift is moving (in Drive). Let me clarify gear shift moving - when the vehicle comes to a stop, the shifter moves about a 1/4" back and forth. This can be repeated if I come to a stop more aggresively.

Before I go under the rig, what could be loose - Motor mount or Tcase mount? Perhaps this is normal with the front driveshaft removed from vehicle?

Thanks for any ideas.

What's back and forth? Side to side? Front to back? Diagonally? Does it go forward first, sideways to the right first, etc? Try to be us thousands of miles away.

Yup, back and forth...as if it goes out of the normal detent and falls back in as soon as the vehicle settles back on its suspension after coming to a quick stop.

Hope that made some sense!
