I pulled the head to replace the gasket and was surprised to see several coolant and oil passages completely blocked. I opened them up but am sure some of the gunk fell into the block. What is the best process for cleaning this up before I reassemble?

The *Best* way is to have the block / Head boiled while disassembled, but NLXTACY just did this with engine in truck and seems like a very good method to me not using harsh chemicals which can do a lot of damage if used improperly. Just remember, whatever you use, RINISE and RINSE and RINSE to clean the block of corrosive chemicals. Use a neutralizer if possible.

are there corresponding holes in the head and or gasket?
for some reason I'm thinking there are a few that are blocked by the gasket
what engine?
which oil passages?
why are you doing the head gasket?
when going back together make sure the gasket is oriented correctly
are you using a Toyota head gasket?
re-torque a few times

It looks like maybe the gasket covered the passages. One round passage and three of the oddly shaped coolant passages

As far as I know, it is the original gasket...250k miles. The gasket failed and the engine overheated. Steam out of the exhaust pipe, a little coolant in the oil.

The replacement I have is oem... It doesn't cover the passages.
