What is the best way to do this? Tap and die set?

I want to add the 7th and 8th bolts on my rear bumper but since the nutserts had never been used they are quite rusty.

How do I know the correct tap to use?

Thanks!

Correct, just get the right size tap and gently clean the threads out with it. Use lots of oil. Not sure what the thread and ptich is on the captive nuts back there, but you could take one of the other bolts in and have the threads measured.

metal wire pipe cleaner?

you should get a tap/die set regardless. a dremel with flat brush head would work perfect depending on the size of the nutzert of course

there is a thick buildup of rust in there, I tried this once and was unsuccessful.

oh and thats what she said.

If your rear frame threaded inserts are as rusted as mine were...I had a couple pop loose during the tapping process. I ended up fabbing a scab plate of sorts with nuts welded to the plate...which is welded to the frame...inserted from the open end of course ;)

Forget the Dremel idea.
Buy decent taps. Cheaper to buy a few Hansens than a set of HF rubbish that only gives you one tap in the size you need.
Go slow and use a tapping oil. Tap Magic is a good example.

I've been looking, but haven't had any luck finding replacement captive nuts for the rear bumper. M14 - 1.5 flange nut 10.9.

Any ideas?

I'm getting ready to build this same type of plate to install my Slee rear bumper. What type of 14-1.5 nut did you weld to the plate (flange nut?). Where did you find them? Any more details on these plates would be great.
